I have a Springfield (full size) 1911, and it got wet from a surprise rainstorm at the range, now I'm stuck with roughly a dozen unsightly rust spots on the slide. How do I get rid of them?
After using the 0000 wool if you have any pits take a #2 pencil and use the carbon and write the rust away.
I have been in soaking rain on two occasions with my 1911 but have always used Breakfree clp which even when the gun looks dry it is still coated with a protective layer of PTFE. There are other products that protect but that is what my friends and I use.
Thanks guys, the wool worked great, it wasn't pitted.. just a little surface rust. What kind of open carry holster to think is best? I noticed that the plastic one Springfield gave me left me a weird mark.
I like to keep several pieces of bronze wool on hand for removing rust. The bronze will never harm your bluing and you can scrub away with gusto if need be. Lubricate your scrubbing action with your favorite gun oil. After cleaning the rust off be sure to clean the surface well with Hoppies...or some such cleaner to totally remove all traces of bronze and rust particles. You don't want to spread oily rust residue all over the affected parts. Get them clean and then oil well.
