Cleaning Without Removing the Barrel

Admittedly I'm a newbie to the shotgun world. When I clean any of my pistols (which I'm very fanatical about), I field-strip and clean the barrel the right way.

But I have a dilemma with my shotgun. It's a Benelli Supernova Tactical, and I have a Nordic mag extension and a light mount that make removing the barrel a serious chore.

So what's the best way to clean the barrel without actually removing it? Just a bore snake? Or would you recommend removing the barrel no matter how much of a pain it is?

Thanks in advance.

Use your brush from the muzzle if you really do not want to take the barrel off - if this has removable chokes, you'll want to remove that and clean the threads inside the barrel and on the choke. I use brake cleaner sprayed in the barrel, a brush on a rod in a cordless drill, then with a patch. IF you go from the muzzle, clean the breech well after and then use a bore snake with a light oil from the breech to the muzzle

You might want to run the rod down the barrel, then screw the brush on inside the action.
Then pull it back through & out the muzzle.

That will get most of the crud the brush pulls loose out of the gun instead of dumping it inside the action.

Otherwise, stuff a rag down in the ejection port to catch all the crap the brush knocks out.

I have shot almost a thsousand rounds through my Maverick Modell 88.
I have yet to take the barrel off of it to clean it.
I use a cleaning rod with patches, and Hoppes#9 to clean the inside of the barrel.
Use Breakfree CLP on the rest of the gun to clean and protect.

A boresnake is decent for a quick basic cleaning, like wiping down the outside with an oily rag, but it is not the same as doing a good thorough cleaning of the barrel

I have a Smith & Wesson 516 with a fixed barrel that CAN'T be removed for cleaning, so swabbing from the muzzle and/or using a Bore Snake are the only alternatives.
