Clinton to Get Advanced Word of Iraq Attack

When President Bush gives the order for U.S. forces to attack Iraq, ex-president Bill Clinton will be among a select handful of Americans who will be notified in advance, reports Fox News Channel's Monica Crowley.

"I'm sure many of you won't be too happy to learn that Clinton will know before the rest of us," Crowley said Sunday, while filling in for vacationing WABC Radio host Steve Malzberg.

Crowley explained that the White House practice of early notification of impending military action is a courtesy that extends to all ex-presidents.

"I remember when I worked for Richard Nixon, the White House would do the same thing for him," she told WABC. "So you can expect that Clinton will get the same treatment."

But the notion that the impeached, disbarred and nearly indicted ex-president will be given the top secret info on the Iraq attack is sure to prompt concern among many Americans. Especially given Clinton's recent attempts to undermine the Bush administration in interviews at home and speeches abroad.

In an October address to Great Britain's Labour Party, for instance, he not only criticized President Bush foreign policy, he also complained that the 2000 election wasn't legitimate.

"The election was so close in America that they won it fair and square - 5 to 4 at the Supreme Court," Clinton joked sarcastically to Labour's annual conference at Blackpool.

"We should actually be glad, though," he continued to grouse in mocking tones. "Because there were seven Republicans and only two Democrats on the Supreme Court - and two of those Republicans - God bless them, they will be rewarded in heaven - they actually took the decision that we should count votes when the American people vote, and I appreciate that."

Last week the ex-president said that his attacks on the Bush administration were appropriate. "I don't think that's being hateful or bad for the country or anything else," he told the Atlantic Monthly. "Even when I give these political speeches, almost in every speech I say, I don't want you ever to treat them the way they treated me. Don't do it."

Still, Clinton's continual criticism of Bush has ruffled more than a few GOP feathers, prompting Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to issue public reprimand.

"Look, former presidents can do damage," McCain told radio host Sean Hannity last month. "It's very unhelpful. It's in some ways damaging."

"I just have two words," he then added. "Shut up!"

Compounding concern over Mr. Clinton's likely early warning of any Iraq attack, it's probable he will share the secret information with his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton - who coordinates political attacks on the Bush White House as head of the Senate's Democratic Steering Committee.

End

As far as I'm concerned, all former Presidents should be informed when the rest of the country is informed.

Clinton is the former president who broke the unwritten rules of behavior by publicly criticising a sitting president both in the US and in foreign countries.

Bill Clinton does not deserve the common courtesy Bush is extending.

Keep thinking republicans will eventually wise up amd begin playing hardball.

Just have the message delivered by a couple of strippers. That dog will be too distracted to be talking with the media. Hitlery of course will continue to be pissed at him for his promiscuous ways. Good to know things won't change in that *happy* household.

Right. And it's also tradition for Helen Thomas to open presidental news conferences.

Bush isn't much for traditions he doesn't like. :neener:

It's common for the President to inform former presidents about such events. Presidents that are fortunate to have followed a real president, like JFK following Ike, often ask the former president for his advice.

As for Clinton, it would be nice if Bush sent him to Iraq on a fact finding mission and then called him on his cellphone, "Bill, look up."

Of course. That's because "they" means George W. Bush, and "the way they treated me" was to gloss over and ignore all Clinton's peccadilloes and worse throughout the entire campaign. Nobody mentions that anymore, but it's true. Bush essentially gave Clinton a pass--at least in public--and Clinton's immorality and crimes were not nearly as large an issue as they could have been. That was actually a pretty brave choice since he shouldn't have had much of a chance against Gore either way.

Now, I'm not naive. I know Bush had allies and proxies who brought up these issues and tried to tie Gore to them. But Bush could have done it himself and gotten a lot more mileage (at least, so I thought at the time) and he chose not to. Turns out he won, so maybe that was the smartest thing he could have done. Either way, Clinton should be very grateful. It could have gone differently for him.

Right before his execution for treason.

Quartus

I was going to suggest that he should be in prison, but I guess you trumped me.:D

PETA won't let you harm it 2dogs. Perhaps in a "return" to Washington, DC, a spot can be found in the National Zoo.

That's got my vote.

If he were to blab about it, would that be treason? What it he only blabs to Hitlery? I think you have to have 2 witness to get convicted for treason. Same thing goes for Carter in my book. Neither of these Bozo's should be trusted.

Hey, I calls 'em like I sees 'em. :D

Don't put those two in the same category. Carter's had the chance to blab on this kind of thing before now, and hasn't. I'm no fan of his, but he HAS demonstrated that he keeps his mouth shut on things like this. He's an idiot, to be sure, but I truly believe he's a well meaning, and yes, even honorable idiot. (Sadly, he's been a USEFUL idiot.)

I can't see Jimmah ever endangering American troops just because he wanted to make political points. Klinton would ENJOY doing that.
