I don’t really have room for a gun cabinet in my apartment. At least for my rifles I’d like to store them in their cases on a permanent basis, but as I understand it the foam that comes in most gun cases tends to retain moisture. I know closed cell foam doesn’t do this so I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere you can get inexpensive closed cell foam sheets of varying thickness to use as replacement foam for a gun cases.

The easiest source for closed cell foam would be to try to find some foam sleeping pads from your local sporting goods store. If they have a scratch and dent bin you can probably find some damaged ones for next to nothing.

Instead of tearing apart your cases, you might consider just buying/finding a silica gel desiccant pack and tossing it in each case. Take a peek at this thread:

You may also look into the Bore-Store silicon impregnated gun covers that can be placed into the gun case without any other padding. They are made in such a way as to not absorb moisture, plus they are plush to protect your rifle or handgun from damage.

Perhaps spraying the foam with a silicon spray or an oil impregnated cloth would work. Anybody with any knowledge care to comment? Just recently I saw an ad for gun storage bags that wrap the gun but I forgot where. Whatever the case low humidity is essential.

I usually store my handguns with a silicone cloth wrapped around them, inside these foam-lined cases that are in question. I have been doing this for literally decades without a single problem. Naturally, the cases with the guns in them have always been kept in a DRY place. YMMV, but i wouldn't worry so much unless there's greater than average moisture or humidity in your storage area.

The local Joanns fabric store has it but it is not cheap.I bought 1 piece 4"x12"x17 and another 1"x12"x17" and they cost around $13.00.

not such a huge deal

I work in packaging and I can tell you most all of the shipping containers (foam lined boxes, cases, and crates) are open cell polyurethane......because it's cheap. We do fabricate closed cell Polythylene for SIG on their sniper rifle packs.

The open cell will also wick up and hold oil....so you can just leave a ligth coat of oil on the gun.

Desicant is also a pretty good idea.

or sew a sock out of an old bed sheet and use it for a barier.
