Hi. I got a gp-100 today (well, in 10 days.. im in cali) and while I was at the store I held a s&w 686, also with stock rubber grips, although they were split in the back (could see the metal spine running most of the way down). Anyway, the fit of the 686 grips was remarkably good for my hands. Can anyone recommend an aftermarket grip for the gp-100 that will come close to that s&w form? I didnt particularly like the ruger grips in the first place but wasnt too concerned because I'd planned changing them anyway, but in holding the 686 now I know what I want the ruger to feel like..

thanks ahead of time.

That is my question too---Do the Ruger grips have the wood inserts or are they all ready Hogues with finger groves? If I am not mistaken, the Hogues for the Ruger will need to wrap around as the Ruger has no back strap.

sorry, I should have been more clear. this seems to be a post wood insert grip model. the grips are the black wrapparound fingerooved ones (hogue i believe). I guess I cant say either what the s&w grips were other than that they were also black rubber. The primary difference i noticed was that the s&w felt significantly thinner near the top of the grip. I guess one pro of thicker grips will be less recoil transferred to my hand, but I dont have large hands so it also means less comfort holding it...

I should go back and check the s&w. If they are in fact hogues then hogue would probably be the person to ask about comparable sizes for the gp100..

yes, although I dont have the gun in front of me, I believe those are what is on it now. The 686 grips looked a lot like this one

http://www.hogueinc.com/getgrip/merchant.ihtml?pid=1189&lastcatid=216&step=4

although that grip does cover less its hard to tell from these pics whether that top area is thinner or not. The sales guy wouldnt let me have two guns out at the same time.. :-(

I sent an email to hogue to see whether the can explain the differences.

thanks!

Hogue grips on a GP100...

I bought a GP100 before Ruger changed the grips.

I liked the feel of the older style grips with the wood inserts. While I like the feel of the old grips, I hate the way the rosewood inserts look with the black rubber. Some people like the old grips, but I think that they are very unattractive.

In my opinion, the hogue grips look much better than the old grip style. More importantly, I think that hogue grips feel a lot better than the older grips. If you like the 686 grips, you will love the hogues on the GP100. The GP100 hogues have a little more padding for the web of your hand and, in my opinion, are more comfortable to shoot than the 686 grips.

Buy those hogues and never look back. If you buy them from Ruger, they will have the Ruger symbol stamped on the grips, rather than the hogue symbol (if that matters to you).

go to the ruger forum somebody will trade ya for those insert grips & pay the shipping , i betcha they would`nt last a hour !!!!!
shoot it before you trade em though , i have tried my fair share of grips & always go back to the factory insert grip.
