A while back, ~5+ years ago, I bought a collection of CMI M1A mags when Midway USA had a sale. I hadn't really had time to tinker with them until I started working on them today. Noticed that the walls of the magazines on about 50% of them interacted with the follower in such a way that the follower would actually "hang" on the side of the mag well (follower edge would just slightly hang over the inner edge of the magazine wall when follower was in the fully upright position.

Needless to say, feeds are "interesting" out of those mags. had 4x 20 rounders and 2x 25 rounders. 2 of the 20's and 1 of the 25's had that issue. Also, wildly varying degrees of build quality to include the followers hanging on other portions of the magazine body such as the front seam. In some respects, they remind me of a project from a high-school metal working class than high-quality magazines. Would experience rounds nose-diving, the back of the follower hanging up, and all sorts of mischief.

Has CMI gotten its act together, or are these things that I can continue to expect should I go back into the market for M1A magazines? Or, did Midway USA get a bunch of counterfeit products, and hence the sale?

No clue but all of my CMI mags have been 100%. They are considered the go-to source for modern mags for the M14 platform. Can you post a closeup of the lug on the back of the mag of one that doesn’t work? Including the welds?
