Sorry, yes… another Upper question. Sorry.

Ok… I had pretty much decided to go with this Upper based on all the info gathered here (3rd one down):
http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/?shop=1&cart=1191521&cat=75&

But based on the recent CMMG price hike, I’m thinking about a fall back to this (flat top).

I’ll be adding the light weight chromed barrel so +$40.

At $525 v. $510, I was going to get the CMMG. But @ $510 v. $575 I’m thinking about just getting the RRA now and being done with it.

Looks like CMMG is back logged about as bad as RRA so no additional benefit there anymore either.

Is the price difference worth it? Should I scrimp on something like the rear sight to make up the difference? Maybe go with a standard trigger and not a 2 stage?

Anyway… Is the CMMG worth that much more than the RRA?

I've heard good things about CMMG, but never used their stuff. In my experience the 1/7 twist is better suited for heavier slugs so you might want to keep that in consideration as the cheaper ammunition generally doesn't come in 68-77gr. I think Wolf has some 75gr stuff but I've never used it.

I've been extremely happy with 2 RRA barrels, one is a 1/8 that runs best with 77gr slugs and a 1/9 that shoots very well with 55s but better with 50s.

I think one of the best things you can get for an AR is a good trigger so I wouldn't take that off your list, but if you get a standard trigger you can always order a better one down the road.

1/7 was the reason to go with the CMMG so I could have 75grn TAP for HD. But I’m thinking that I may just settle for 60grn TAP and deal with the 1/9.

For the low volume of 68+ I’ll be throwing through it, I may be willing to give up some punch for keeping the 2 stage trigger.

I know CMMG is better, but I don't know if it's THAT much better.

From what I understand, the OP is just buying an upper and not a kit, which does not have a trigger.

As far as brands go, I wouldn't worry about RRA being that much lower in quality. I hear they have some of the best bolts in the price range as well.

He said he thought about ditching the 2 stage trigger, so I guess he's looking to build a lower with an already built upper.

CMMG seems to be really good quality, but RRA definitely makes a descent rifle. Looks like RRA has the upper in stock right now, not sure about the CMMG upper. I don't know if CMMG really does take 14-21 days to process and ship an order but that seems a little long.

Sorry... Didn’t include all the info.

Yes, Building the lower and getting a fully built upper. I may play the "build an upper" game with my next AR attempt should the political fates allow it. But for something that will have as it duty SHTF/HD, I didn't trust my skills.

The only corners I can see to cut are the Rear Sight and the Trigger. I really rather not skimp on the sight so stepping down to a regular trigger would give me what I need (+ a little extra) to get the CMMG.

But I like RRA as well so it's all up in the air. I think RRA may have a better bolt than the standard CMMG, but CMMG as some things like extended feed ramps and such. Honestly unsure if I care a huge bunch about that for the extra $.

If you want the RRA, you can get it much cheaper by ordering from Pete at Legal Transfers. He's one of the nations largest RRA and Stag dealers, and gets great prices.

Update:

I think we are going with the RRA. Found it for $465 which is a pretty big difference.

Hope I'm not making a mistake. The 1/7 would have been nice if the wife wanted to use it for hunting up to small deer. But that's a ways off (even if she was to decide that) so I'll come up with something else small and low recoil.
