I'm looking to build/buy an AR-15 in the near future. It'll be a carbine length flat top with HYM lightweight free-floating quad rails, match trigger, and Mag-Pul CTR stock.

I can get a Stag stripped lower for less than $100, and build from there, or I can get almost exactly what I want from CMMG for around $1350.

What do the experts think? Is CMMG equal to or better quality than Stag?

Half of me wants to build my rifle, and half wants to go with a quality manufacturer's product.

Both are excellent companies with excellent reputations. What I like about CMMG is that you have a lot more options when ordering from them. I would go with CMMG, but would not have any problems ordering a Stag.

I just ordered a CMMG 20" upper today, based at least partially on many favorable reviews I've seen online. But I will say that there appeared to me to be a significant savings possible if I pursued my lower from other sources.

You will get a slightly better quality from CMMG then Stag. Stag make a great rifle, but CMMG take a few extra steps.
Better quality steel in the BBL, shot peened bolt, pressure test the bolt carrier group, and they MPI test the bb, bolt, and carrier. 1:7 rifling and true M4 feed ramps in bbl extension and receiver.
You can also do better then 1350 on the price.
