CMP ammo question.

Well, three questions actually.

- Do you have to be CMP qualified to buy ammo from them? I have yet to get the dang certification to buy the rifles, but I'd sure like a nice supply of 30-06.

- I'm confused by the comment they make on the website regarding ammo deliverability. They say "*AMMO CANNOT BE HELD AT FEDEX LOCATION (PER REGULATIONS) OR LEFT AT FRONT DOOR - AMMO MUST BE SIGNED FOR* What exactly does this mean? If I'm not there (likely, during the day) does this mean they immediately ship it back to the CMP? That is - they wouldn't at least hold it a day or two for me to pick it up? Seems to me anyone who works has an exceedingly small chance of being home for the average Fedex delivery.

- Some places are finnicky about selling to Illinois people without a copy of a FOID. Anyone know if CMP requires one of these? I don't mind having to send mine in, but it's a bit of a hassle, and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

The best way to find out about the specifics for ordering ammo, email the CMP at [email protected] and ask them about requirements and Illinois delivery.

When I received a shipment of the Greek ammo, I was gone when the driver showed up. He left a door tag that said they would make another delivery attempt the next day. The door tag also said that I could sign the tag and put it back on the front door and they would leave it without by being there.

What is strange is that there is a blue FedEx tag on the side of the box that gives the courier specific instructions. It says:
"COURIER: SIGNATURE REQUIRED NO INDIRECT DELIVERY Signature release is NOT allowed and a signed Delivery Notice by the recipient is not acceptable."

Fortunately, I was home the next day so I just signed the slip and he gave the wooden box to me. It seemed to me that FedEx was not following their own rules or they had no idea that the box contained ammo. The box had the ORM-D sticker and the box is just the way it left the Greek ammo factory and even show a caliber designation and the word "ammunition" appears on the sides and top of the box.

You do have to have some sort of membership to qualify for CMP ammo. You will have to ask them. I think it is the same as the club affiliation requirement for buying a rifle.

I had them ship ammo to my parents house since I am not home during the day and I live in townhome and wouldn't want them leave it at the door.

Funny story for me at least: I bought a Garand last year. Somehow the shipping address got in wrong and instead of shipping it to my parents, they shipped to my house (billing address). I got home and got the tag off the front door. After a few minutes, I realized it was for the rifle that was supposed to have arrived that day. I ended up going over to the local FedEx depot and picking up the rifle. I am not sure they were supposed to do that, but their computer system had gone down and they were barely able to find the package at all. Happy ending for me at least.

From my experience and stories I have heard on this site, FedEx and UPS are pretty liberal about enforcing those rules. I have had several packages delivered by UPS in the last year. I have yet to even see one of their drivers. They always ring the door bell, drop the box, and drive off as I get to the door.

I'm not sure fedex follows their own rules 'exactly' to the letter. I've got a standing order at my local fedex to hold everything shipped to me for pickup.

No matter what the shipping label says, they give me a call at work to let me know I have a package. It saves everyone a lot of running around, as I live 20 mi out of town.

Of course, it didn't work so well when my wife ordered a present for me and they called me to come pick it up (recognized the address, I guess)

The last time I ordered from CMP (two Garands), FedEx left a tag on my door. I called them and told them to hold them at the FedEx facility, and picked them up there a few days later. No problem.

I've had FedEx leave guns on my front porch. At my old house. In the 'hood. With junkies and prostitutes walking up and down the street.

I ordered one of the last of the 1903A3s from CMP. I honestly don't know if FedEx of UPS delivered it, because they left it SITTING ON MY FRONT PORCH.
Hidden behind a couple of flower boxes. If a neighbor hadn't come by to drop off a mis-delivered piece of mail, I never would have noticed it, because my family does almost all our coming and going through the garage.
