Why not just take your wife to Omish country with a quick stop of at the CMP! Romance and guns. What could be better?

Since you are in Michigan, you may want to consider driving to Camp Perry (between Toledo and Cleveland) and picking out your own rifle.

Well worth the trip. But you will probably want to buy more than one rifle while you're there.

This is copied from earlier Post

Can You buy more than one rifle at a time from CMP store? Maybe one Rack to refurbish and one higher grade to beat around?

I went down to Al store last week and bought some Carbines, two of which were labled "rack grade' and cost less than Service Grade...but darned if I can tell any diff.
Bore mic's just as good, and is bright and shiney. In fact, wood on one was better than either of the Service grades.
It was a 6 hr trip for me too, and worth ever second of it.
They had a ton of Garands, but I know nothing about them
and passed them up.

Get on the CMP web site and take with you all the documentation they call for. They go over that while you are looking and picking. I think just being a member of some CMP affiliated club is all that is needed, other than
birth cert, CC if you have one, etc; i even took them a copy of my army retirement. They accepted that I had been a member of the Nat. Security Agency as sufficient in lieu of club membership. Very helpful people too.

Finally got an e-mail back from CMP people today and all requirements are the same. Drivers Lic, CMP Club aff, Passport or Birth Cert, She did however tell me that a hunting license from a state that requires hunter safety with shooting skills is acceptable for the shooting experience part. Good to know. Well get the smoking credit card ready and off to Camp Perry! :neener::neener:

May get so mezmorized by all the cool milsurp goods that I need to get a motel. Looking forward to seeing Camp Perry as well. Anyone know if there is anything going on at Camp Perry in March? Don't get off the farm much and would like to make a trip of it. Take in some of Camp Perry's history-events. Have an 87 yr old friend that used to shoot matches there in the 60's and promised to take 2009 photo's so he can see what has changed.

I haven't lived in the area for a few years, but there used to be a local group shooting trap occasionally. The Camp itself is very quiet most of the year. You might try calling the Ottawa County Visitor's Bureau (I think that's the name) and see if they have any contact numbers you could call.

That whole area is pretty dead that time of year, the Ohio North Coast is a seasonal summer heaven for visitors May thru October, but in March everyone is still defrosting.

I hope you enjoy the trip. That little section of Ohio is one of my favorite places in the world, except from mid Jan to mid April.
