cmp qualifications

You do NOT have to shoot in an organized match, or attend a clinic. Not anymore.

I wasted a couple years because I didn't realize how EASY it had become to qualify.

On the CMP web site it says:

You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:

Current or past military service.
Current or past law enforcement service
Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
Concealed Carry License.
Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
FFL or C&R license.
Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf
No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages.

I was about to send off for my CRFL (Curio & Relic license), when I saw that last bit at the end.

I printed a copy of the form,

http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf

and went to the range. I put the form on a clipboard, along with a pen, and explained what I was after to the Range Officer. I asked him to please keep an eye on me while I was shooting, and sign the form if he was satisfied.

Then I just relaxed and did some shooting (no Tannerite!), and about 20 minutes later, the R.O. got my attention to show me he had signed off on my form.

It was so-freaking-easy.

That was a Saturday. I had my forms in the mail Monday.

Note:

GCA will have your membership status in their database if you check off "inform CMP of membership" on your application. Then on your CMP form, under club affiliation, write "GCA- check database". Makes it really easy.

Any decent bank will notarize your forms for free. Just ask the nice lady at the desk. (I was astonished that BB&T no longer does this. I walked out in a huff, and the nice lady at the bank next door was only too happy to notarize them.)

Don't forget to include the checklist (form 4). It simplifies processing.

And when you get your M1, post pictures here and on the CMP forum. "It didn't really happen if you don't post pictures."

pbd902,

You're going to Ramseur AUG 30-31???

That is as good as it gets!
I just took a peek at your instructors for the weekend...you are getting some of the very best there are. I've worked with some, know the rest by their reputation, what a birthday present!

Make sure you get a 1.25" USGI sling set up on your rifle before you go. A pair of Uncle Mike's detachable sling swivels and a web sling - your best investment.
