From http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/03/02/senate.guns/index.html:

In a series of votes Wednesday, senators added an amendment to Craig's bill that would have closed the loophole that allows the purchase of guns at gun shows without a background check...

My response:

This "loophole" characterization is a clear misstatement of fact.

Under federal law, LICENSED FIREARMS DEALERS must complete a background check, regardless of where they sell a gun, whether in a store, a gun show, a home or anywhere else.

Also under federal law, a NON-FIREARMS-DEALER INDIVIDUAL may sell a gun face-to-face without a background check, whether in a gun show, a home or anywhere else.

To "close" this non-existent "loophole," private sales would have to require a background check at gun shows, while requiring no background check in the street or parking lot outside. This makes little sense.

Once again, there is no "loophole." This is a term coined by gun control advocates to make it seems like something to be fixed.

It's nice to live in a state where you can still conduct a deal with a firm handshake & an exchange of goods (green paper for machined steel).

It's been funny listening to the news since 4:00ish EST when the media realized that they didn't know just how to spin this.

You're exercising that "freedom of speech" loophole. Can't have that unless your ideas are "progressive."

I hate to be the spoil sport, but your letter wont change their stance. Its sort of like farting to push back the winds of a hurricane.

Kind of like writing, emailing, and calling your congress critters.

Mpayne, good letter. Well stated. Even if CNN doesn't care, you posted it here and reinforced your own and then our views. At least you accomplished that. Thanks.

Thats it! We all need to stand together and fart together! Enough farting from our side will not go unnoticed!
And they call a bunch of us "old Farts" :D

Well, I don't think the editors at CNN are going too wake up and say, "Gee! I never looked at it that way!"

Still, the more people that call them on it (HINT HINT), the more they have to consider the fact that they're not fooling all of the people all of the time.

And honestly, before I woke up, I honestly believed garbage like the "Gun Show Loophole." It's so pervasively indoctrinated, one never thinks to question.

Perhaps I have planted a seed of doubt in someone's mind.

Heinlein did it for me, One never knows what the trigger will be.

Closing the “gun-show loophole†is just the first step in closing the “private-sale loophole.â€
