CNN notices Duracoat for the first time.

***? Since when would it NOT be legal to color your possessions in any manner that you please?
It's already been that way for toy guns, IIRC. Not technically legal to remove the orange tip or change it's color, although I may be mistaken.

So if CNN is right I could paint my Honda Barbie pink and everyone would think it's a kids toy. Give me a break.

Every time someone does a news report on the evils of Duracoat, Steve says his sales go through the roof.

The MSM is quite good at disguising an advertisement as news. ;)

Annoy a gun-grabber!

Paint them all PINK!

Oh, the things "news" people try to frighten us with....

And to imagine, there's no law to stop someone, who broke the law in order to get a firearm, from painting it to look like a toy so he can use it to break the law. There should be laws against such law-breaking!

.

Man, and I always considered the 1911 design to be the antithesis of the Glock design, I didn't think anyone could get them mixed up...
To those unfamiliar with guns, it's easy to do so(which would include reporters, Brady Campaign, 99% of politicians, etc.). At work I have a picture of my 1911 on my desktop, and my supervisor asks "So, that's a 9mm Glock?" :p

Having been a federal lawman for some twenty-five years (more or less), I think some of these paint jobs should be illegal. The owners of some of these guns should be slapped by the fashion police - the same group who ticket fat women in hot pants and so forth.

I am forever amazed by the depths of nonsense to which the hoplophobes will descend in order to further the agenda.

To think painting a firearm will 'disguise' it in some fashion, how curious? The sad truth is various cops have - to their horror and sorrow - shot people with laser tag 'guns', cameras, TV controllers and wallets.

For that matter, no matter what it looks like, once the firearm is fired, the cat is out of the bag so to speak. If it makes a real loud bang, the coloration will not make much difference. (Happily, most bad guys are pretty rotten shooters and don't connect the first shot - a great blessing to lawmen of all ilks.)

Perhaps if I paint my automobile a drab color, the Highway 'Trolls won't think it will really go over the speed limit?

mark it down then.

my point is that cops making statements with their cop hat on that x should be illegal or the law ought to be this way or that is tantamount to members of the military making statements on foreign policy. It's not the proper form. I take you back to the first briefing in Top Gun. "we do not make policy here, gentlemen. Civilians, politicians do that. We are the instuments of that policy"

Maybe that's not what Archie's point was but I've been seeing and hearing all kinds of LEO's on the news and in print saying "this ought to be outlawed" or "I don't understand why that's legal" and with the power a police leo has to arrest and have you "tell it to the judge", it's kind of scary that law enforcement gets a pass when it comes to the separation of powers.

"we're cops and this protects us. forget what it does to the rights of the citizens. we're out here risking our necks"

If you're scared your parachute won't open, don't jump out of the plane.

I've been reading Archie's posts for a while. I believe that he knew what he was getting into when he swore the oath and put on the badge. I believe that he stands by his oath.

Some of the politicians in police chiefs' uniforms, however, are political hacks, pure and simple.

I think that real cops hate them as much as the rest of us do. They're traitors to their oaths and to their country.

Geo,

If you look at Archie's entire post, he goes on to say that the Fashion Police should write the ticket. I believe he was going for a little tongue in cheek way of saying "BEE-JEZUS THAT'S AN UGLY GUN"

I said you could mark it down.

i was really more refering to the one in the video, the one from another thread about NIU/School paper article and any other law enforcement officer that fancies himself a law maker

Naw, see, that's how insidious and Eeeeevil this DuraCoat stuff is. It can make a Glock look exactly like a 1911. Even you guys were fooled.

I gotta get me some of that stuff. I want paint my '94 to make it look like a '92 and paint my Garand to make it look exactly like a Browning. I might even paint my Honda to make it look like a Ferrari.

I think they did not follow the direction on the can. Concentrating and inhaling paint vapors can be dangerous you know.

This story just aired on LOCAL 6 in Orlando: They used the Pics from CNN & all

I just sent the following email to them;

I do not know what disappoints me more; your biased, uniformed story on painted guns or that fact that you stole it from CNN.

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/02/19/resnik.painted.guns.kpnx

I expected more from your news station, I guess I was wrong.

Respectfully,

Bill

I doubt I will get a response.

They aired it on a local news station in Oregon last night too. Either it was a slow news day or Sarah Brady sent out a lot of lovely fruit baskets filled with cash and Toblerone.
I want one of those Bloomberg specials just to spite him.

Good job CNN. My wife saw that on their site last night and is now contacting the guy to have her AR-15 done to match the Hello Kitty. Not sure that's the reaction they wanted...but good for her. :)

Notice that hit piece showed a picture of my Hello Kitty AR15 that was taken after it was painted but before I put it together. The reporter tells the woman "that is a weapon used by the military".

My first thought was "gosh the military uses Hello Kitty M16's?"

They most likely didn't steal it. National news stories end up on local affiliates all the time. A completely finished and packaged story equates to less work done by your local news office and reporters.

Yes, they should have known better, but the broadcasting of national news stories on local affiliates is hardly stealing. Also note that this is a 2-way street. Stories from local network affiliates can end up making national news if it's something that the national news people think would be of general interest.

Some ignorant girl in the school cafeteria today said something to the effect of how inappropriate she thought it was to paint an AK47 with the Hello Kitty colors and theme.

Needless to say I educated her. By the time I was done, I'm pretty sure that she realized just how ignorant she was on the matter.

I hope that you were nice to her. Remember: convincing her not to say mean things is only half of the task. The goal is to let her eventually realize that she wants one.

LOL, yeah I know. I wasn't rude or anything. I just pointed out a couple of things. For example, that coloring a rifle pink (for example) is no different that having a pink butane lighter around. Furthermore, I mentioned the fact that as long as your children are educated in firearms safety, there is not harm done - no matter what color the firearm is. She spouted off at the mouth about how unsafe guns are for children and I told her hat I have been shooting since I was four years old (I actually started much later, but she doesn't know). I also let her know that an "assault rifle," as CNN labeled it, is not readily available to civilians, but this is common scare tactic used by the media. I followed this up with a definition of an assault rifle and then a definition of a semiautomatic rifle, which often look similar in appearance.

I hope she thinks twice the next time she wants to open her mouth about a subject of which she has no knowledge.
