Police: Resident kills burglar

By Felix Doligosa, Rocky Mountain News
July 18, 2006

A burglar breaking into a home in the 1700 block of Fulton Street this morning was shot to death by the occupant of the home, Aurora police said.

Authorities have not released the identities of either the alleged burglar or the shooter, but neighbors said they believe the occupant of the home is a man, possibly a high school teacher, who lives alone.

Aurora Detective Bob Friel said the prowler pulled an air conditioner from its slot in a window and climbed into the modest, one-story bungalow about 8:25 a.m.

Friel said the occupant of the home shot the burglar with a 12-guage shotgun and then called 911 to report it.

The shooting victim was taken to a hospital but died on the way.

Friel said there had been other break-ins at the home, which has boarded-up windows in back.

He said it will be up to the Adams County district attorney to rule whether the shooting falls under Colorado's Make My Day law, which allows people to use force to protect their homes from intruders.

The law has been commonly known by that name since 1985. It may or may not have started with a 'journalist', but it certainly wasn't started by this one.

This newstory is also discussed in this THR thread.
