As title says. I am using my Hornady LnL for 9mm loading 5.8gr of Ramshot Silhouette under a Ranier Ballistics 124gr copper plated round nose (their are marketed as Ranier LeadSafe Bullets 9mm (.355 diameter) 124 grain Plated Round Nose case of 1000 UPC 0238132210 - bought through MidwayUSA). Seems every thing is working on the LnL however, my AOLs are all over the place. I am shooting for 1.160in and I am getting anywhere from 1.153in to 1.176in.
So I called Hornady and explained the situation to them. I questioned whether the New Dimension Dies are the problem. I told them that I was using the round nose stem insted of the flat nose stem in the seating die and asked whether I should switch over to the flat nose seating stem to ensure my COAL were all the same. I was told no and that the COAL were not all that important on the RN bullets because the ogive was going to vary.
I understand the variance in the COAL that RN bullets can cause however the variances are way to much for my taste. If I use the round nose stem my COAL are gong to vary (it should not be more than +/- .003 though) but I am way out in the ballpark right now. If I use the flat nose stem to seat, I can achieve a stable 1.160 but now some of the bullets will be sitting considerably back from the lands.
Apparently the ogive on this batch of RN bullets varies quite alot. While the variance is not too significant for my H&K SD9 Tactical, I also will be shooting these out of a IMI baby 9.
So, should I go for the stable COAL of 1.160in using the flat nose stem or should I let the variance not bother me due to the ogive on these bullets using the round nose stem?
