I want thank Kbob and RC Model(RIP) for the tip in 2015 about Coast knives I had 2- BX309 knives lost one and still have one. they are excellent for the price cuz knives seem to always get lost!!

I was in the AutoZone here in Houma,LA recently and to my surprise there was a whole rack of Coast knives! not as cheap as Home Depot but there they were!!

I also had trouble with the tiny screws coming loose but other than that I think these knives are a very good value. The half serrated blade is very handy for cutting rope or branches etc and the regular blade stays sharp. The pocket clip keeps the knife very handy for one handed use, if necessary. My BX309 is my EDC knife.

According to Coast website the closest thing to a BX 309 is the BX 316 for $23.00! Still a very good deal!!

Yep, I remember when RC gave the "heads up" about those.
I carry an FX416 as my yard knife all the time here. Kinda big and bulky but it cuts well and can handle the occasional "light hacking" down in the blackberry patch.

Funny!
I was just at A.Z. last week looking at the "impulse buy" rack as I was being served and thought to myself: "Damn, look how cheap a damn decent knife is these days!"

I just checked my local Home Depot has them for $9.97! I think I'll go buy a couple. I once read in an outdoor magazine, as a young man, that if you find a tool or device you really like buy a couple because they are sure to quit making and selling them!!!

Man I really miss RC Model-- He was a great and knowledgeable guy and a helluva teacher on THR!! that man was a true craftsman in many areas!!

RC is truly missed and that is for sure. I loved his DIY mods and such. I joked with him about sending me one of his knives and am sorry I never seriously pressed him for one.

I used the Coast clipped to my pocket today and thought of him.

Bull Nutria,

It has been my experience that if a manufacture finds out I like a product, then, yes, it is soon no longer made! At least it seems that way. I hope Coast doesn't learn of my approval of their knives!!!!!!

Kbob,

When I visited RC Model at his home I gave him a small taxidermy alligator head. He had asked me hundreds of questions about "Swamp People" and he also wanted a gator hook. He was thrilled with both! I didn't expect anything in return. However RC handed me a small antler handled buck knife that he had customized in a custom RC Model sheath. He told me to use it not to set it on a shelf or in a drawer!! I cherish it to this day. I recently look at one of his DIY posts on the last knife he made and made me cherish that little knife even more!

How true.

I purchased a few Gerber 200 knives in the eighties, I put them on keychains but over the years I lost 2 of them and Gerber stopped making them. Its not a spectacularly fantastic knife or anything, but I really like them. I only have one left now...

I was in the local Home Depot earlier today, and had to get something in the tool aisle. I had never looked twice at the Coast knives before, but added a BX309 to my shopping cart. That is one stout little knife, and will take up residence in my glove box as a backup to whatever I am carrying.

I purchased a Boker almost 10 years ago to keep in the glove compartment, but the more I thought about it the more I worried that I might not be able to reach the glove compartment or get it open if I were in an accident and had to cut my seat belts.

I now have a BX309 clipped to the sun visor.

I'm not sure it will stay clipped to the visor during an accident - but it's better to have options than not...

Great! Now I have to clean out the truck. I carry a hatchet, leather punch, fence tool and Philips and flat head screw drivers in my driver's door pocket, bowie knife and hammer in my passenger side door pocket, Open box of fence staples and assorted nails in the rear passenger door pocket and currently there is a felling axe and splitting axe on the rear floor board. Just yesterday while loading up some feed in the truck I was reminded of the scene in one of the Tornado movies where folks take refuge in a pump house lined with an abundance of farm tools only to exclaim "What kind of people live here!?!?!?!" Now I am reminded of three rolls and a flip in a car as a 'ute and recalling flying text books and luggage...….and thinking about all those loose tools in my truck!

Maybe I SHOULD get a bed box.....and another Coast clip on for the truck.

I've carried a little Gerber knife in my pocket forever, as my Dad always said you never know when you're gonna need it. BTW I was unaware of the Coast knives at Home Depot, I'll have to check them out. Always liked the clip on knives, of which I have quite a few, but never heard of the "Coast" knifes. BTW most of my knives are Buck, Gerber, K-Bar, and a couple of custom made Bowie Knives.

I had an FX416 frame lock that (along with some other knives) got passed on to some missionaries in Haiti. Other than the excessively sharp tipped serrations, I really liked the FX416. I later picked up a BX309 from Home Depot. My BX309 developed significant up and down, and side to side blade play after one use. I emailed Coast asking what to do, since it would cost more in gas to drive 60 miles round trip to return the knife, and nearly as much to ship it to them under warranty. They sent me another BX309 at no charge. It too has lots of blade play.

While the Coast frame locks have good lockup without blade play, they still have jimping that's too aggressive for my tastes. My experience is that the $15-$20 Ganzo folders available on Amazon are a better overall deal.

thinking about all those loose tools in my truck!

I was driving with a friend in Lousiana, and a lot of the roads have clay shoulders, and it rains a lot in Louisiana, he went around a turn and his rear tire crept out onto that clay shoulder, the car fished tailed out, went off the road and rolled. I don't know why he had his gear in the back instead of in the barracks, but he did. An e-tool came flying up from the back and cut him on the side of the head right above the ear. Luckily it wasn't a deep cut. He still has a scar but his hair grows over it.

I think if that e-tool had been a few inches to the left he'd have been killed.

This is natural selection giving you an opportunity to step out of the express line. I keep nothing harder than my cell phone out in the open in my vehicle.

A good reminder not to store your bowling ball collection in your back seat. :)

I assume they have some plain edge models as well? Fully serrated blades are great, but IMO a partially serrated blade is the worst of both worlds.
