Will a collapsible stock work on a 20" AR? I cant imagine why it wouldnt, but I wonder if the spring is different or the tube is shorter or something so the timing or whatever would be messed up. I am thinking about a Magpul CTR for my 20" Bushmaster. There is a kit that comes with the new tube, buffer and spring along with the stock.

Thanks for any input.

It should be fine. The fixed stock on 20" models is more of an aesthetics/balance issue than anything else.

Boss,

Anytime the stock is changed in lenght, serious consideration should go to the buffer group - recoil spring. I the new stock comes with a new buffer group and it is designed for your caliber (5.56/.223), I would use the new group. Lenght of the barrell should have little to do with the but end of this rifle.

Semper Fi!

I'll work just fine as long as you use the buffer and spring that come with the stock. I'm running a six position collapsible on my RRA Varmint (18 Inch) and love it as I can adjust the length if I'm wearing a really heavy coat when out shooting coyotes. I just wish I could find a good collapsible stock with an adjustable or raised cheekpiece for a left handed shooter.

Magpul stock can be adapted to any A1 or A2 full length buffer tube.
It won't adapt to the collapsing stock buffer tube because there is no threaded hole for screw attachment on the carbine tube.

the collapisable stocks l;ook funny on the 20" barrel models but they are a great assest allowing you to change the lenght of pull depending on the application ie. wearing or not wearing body armor, and etc. do use the carbine recoil spring and buffer.

The first AR I built up was a 20" with a CAR stock, and frankly I thought it balanced poorly compared to the standard stock. It had a heavy barrel, so that might have been (probably was) the main issue, but it never looked quite "right" either, balance aside.

The next one I assembled was a heavy barrel carbine with a full size stock. Nice to use, nicely balanced.

My third AR was an M4orgery, and it was nicely balanced as well.

My current AR has a 18" SPR mid-length barrel with an ACE stock, and I am mighty pleased with it. For me, it is the best of all.

I suppose a standard weight 20" barrel with a CAR stock might feel OK, but it is, after all, a matter of YOUR personal taste. Besides, it is not as though you can't change the darn thing out iffen y'all don't fall in love and get married!:D

Thanks for all of the replies. If I dont like it I have a 16" carbine I can put it on. I hope it works ok though, it would be nice to be able to make the gun a bit more compact sometimes.

I didnt find the adj stocks fit me well , I always ended up using them fully extended since I have long arms ( and am not LE so I dont wear armor ).
I had a VLTOR Clubfoot , it was a much more solid adj stock then another 6 position I had , a friend has MAGPUL's on all his AR's and they are solid and dont rattle much at all.

I still like the ol A2 stock ( with the trapdoor filled with lead shot ;) ).

Here's mine...

This is my 20" rifle for 3-gun comp use:
