College student killed in gun accident

Sadly that is not an accident, the gun did what the guy made it do. I feel for them all. The parents of the guy should feel the worst for not teaching their child proper firearm handling skills.

 I find myself very uncomfortable with people who want to lock everybody up everytime some poor unfortunate ends up dead. Certainly you must always practice safe gun handling, but in my world, God sometimes removes us from the party and thats why we call them acts of God!
In this instance, and really every instance of such sudden and tragic finality, it's always best to wait and get the whole story before we just arbitrarily cast some poor soul into the dungeon and lock the door...even if it's only on our forum...;)

I think in situations like this were someone is accidentally killed it should be up to the dead person's family to decide if manslaughter charges get filed instead of a district attorney.

If the family forgives the person and doesn't want them to do time then the government shouldn't lock them up.

What good is it doing society for the person to do time in that instance?

Let them be in society and contribute to it (maybe mandatory community service type situation) rather then soak up gov't funds in a prison.

The problem with this is that it cannot help but be based on emotion. If we live in a society of laws then we must have those laws applied in as consistent and logical a manner as possible. Usually by a third party with no emotional ties to the event. This tends to have a moderating effect on both punishment and forgiveness.

This is the same reasoning that caused Gov Kaine to keep Va Tech families off the investigation board. You wouldn't believe the things some of those families wanted enacted simply because they were grieving and desperate to "do something" so they'd feel like they had some control in their lives again.

This is also the same reasoning that applies to battered spouses who would continue to "forgive" the abuser right up until they get killed unless a rational outside influence was applied.

Dude... if the girl's own mother doesn't believe he should go to jail who are we to tell him that he should?

Instead of lighting torches and gathering wood, I'm going to try to find him and offer my condolences... and the girl's family as well. I only wish I was better at finding out these things.

If made an example of he can deter future mistakes. How many people will clean guns with others in the room if the last guy who did it got 20 yrs in prision?

I am not sure prison time would do this person any good. However, given the situation if it turns out it was truly an accident what would be wrong with community service.

Have this guy do several hundred hours of community service going around explaining how important it is to practice proper gun safety. Notice I said to explain how important it is, not to teach it.

That would benefit more people.

All sympathy and empathy to those involved.

I would really like to know what kind of firearm was involved.

I understand that with some guns, one has to pull the trigger to dismount the slide, and apprently, this has happened a number of times with firearms of this design.

Yes, no pointing, and yes, all four rules, but I'd like to know.

First, I feel for the people involved but for all who believes they should hang the kid for a mistake. Look at yourself. It doesn't have to be a mistake with a gun it could be anything. Driving while on the phone, didn't check the air in your tires whcih caused a blowout and then you wrecked your car. That list could go on and on.

The fact is things happen.
