As a CA resident, I have used my out of state UT CCW to carry in Colorado. This is now not possible during my trips there, and I'm left with open carry while I figure out a new permit setup.

I like open carry, and have done so in "rural" parts of CO, but I'm looking for something more discrete, that still retains legality. I understand the Denver limitation, but I won't be going there.

A while back, Anarchangel posted an entry on his blog about discrete AZ carry - you only have to show a small percentage of the grip or holster. Is there an equivalent in CO?

In addition, I like to wear a sports jacket and jeans, would an OWB with an open sports jacket be considered concealed, as I suspect?

Typically I carry a 642 concealed, or a 686 OWB, but I'm open to suggestions.

I called a few sheriff's in CO and you can carry in a vehicle w/o a permit. And open carry outside large cities.

glcokman is correct, you can CCW without a permit in your vehicle.

Denver is really the main place you'll get hassled on open carry. Most of the state is open carry friendly (although you will likely get hassled in the ski towns, Boulder and certainly in Denver).

Down here in The Springs you're good to go.

Where 'bouts in CO you going to be? Maybe someone can get more specific info for you.

Don't open carry in Denver

You'll be more than "hassled" in Denver. Open carrry is illegal in Denver. Denver asserted home rule over open carry. It went to the Colorado Supreme court where a split decision among six justices affirmed lower court rulings. The lower court rulings upheld Denver's right to outlaw open carry.

Denver also has a high capacity magazine ban as well. Over 20 rounds is illegal, I think.

Open carry in most municipal jurisdictions is prohibited by local ordinance. It's legal under state law but the state defers to local jurisdictions on this.

The catch is, even though it's legal in many areas, you can still be charged with another offense (trespassing, disorderly conduct, maybe others) depending on how someone reacts to seeing your gun openly displayed.

I had no idea that local ordinance over-ruled the state pre-emption, and I've read some local ordinances.

I'll be travelling in the south (Colorado Springs region) and in the north (Roosevelt forest area) predominantly.

Is there allowance for "subtle" open carry, and would a sports jacket be considered concealment?

I must have missed something. Why can't you use your UT CCW permit to carry here in Colorado? Does Colorado not reconize the UT permit anymore? I didn't get the memo on that.

Around Colorado Springs open carry will be fine.

Standing Wolf has been open carrying his 629 since he moved here from the PRK a couple of years ago and nobody hassles him.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess no. If you're carrying in an OWB holster with a jacket covering it I believe under Colorado law it would be considered concealed. You might call or fire off an email to the Sheriff's departments of the counties you're considering carrying in. Colorado Springs is in El Paso county and we have a wonderful Sheriff here (he had our county run as "Shall Issue" back when the rest of the state was "May Issue") Terry Maketa

Kinda, the law changed so that you have to live in the state your permit was issued in. So UT residents with UT permits can still CCW here, but no more PRK folk getting UT or FLA permits and CCWing here.

Stupid Democrats.

Yep, pretty much. My two main carry guns are a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 60 five-shooter .357 magnum and a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 629 six-shooter .44 magnum with a three-inch barrel. I switch back and forth as required by my lower back, and also switch from weak (cross draw) to strong side carry.

Variable kind of guy, I guess.

I carry openly about half the time. It's not that nobody hassles me, but that virtually no one notices I'm carrying a gun.

I thought that to be applicable to Colorado residents only. I guess that I have some reading to do.

Interesting ... I didn't carry when I lived in CO, but I still have friends and relatives down there and might someday be going back to visit. I've gotten rather spoiled to living in MT the last 10 years ;)

Standing Wolf, do you know if having the lower part of the holster exposed is okay as "open carry" or do you have to have the grip exposed as well?

Also, as far as driving through Denver is concerned - would you just pull it out of your holster and stick it in the console, or what ???

TallPine, your MT permit is recognized in CO, at least for the time being.

Pursuant to Colorado law (CRS 18-12-213), the State of Colorado will recognize a valid permit issued in another state IF the permit was issued to a resident of the state issuing the permit, and the permittee is 21 yrs of age or older, AND the other state recognizes Colorado permits as valid in their state.
...
The state of Colorado no longer recognizes the validity of any permit issued by any state to a nonresident (see CRS 18-12-213 amended 2007).
