I will be moving to Denver this summer to work. I will be there from May 15 to Aug 15. I have considered taking my 17hmr and maybe 243 with me to do some small game hunting. Here is the dilema I won't have any private property to hunt on since I will no 0 people. Are there any public areas with small game (coyotes, squirels, praire dogs, etc) around Denver? Would I be wasting my time and money in the adventure? Any advice I could get would be great. Thanks

Bratch,

Yes there is lots of public land west of Denver you can hunt Coyotes and stuff on. You are also only about 90 miles south of the Wy border. Can you Prairie Dogs??

You will have to buy a small game license..

Pawnee National Grasslands are a short drive (call it an hour and a half) from Denver. Always had fun dogging there.

The neighbors around the grasslands have been known to poison the dog towns on private property, as Prarie Dogs can carry bubonic plague.

Don't handle a dead one.

Or a live one, I'm told they bite.

thanks guys I just got a bull barreled 25-06 that will be
making the trip with me. maybe I could meet up with some of you locals for a little fun.

If you want to head north of the border for a weekend or two, drop me a PM, and I'll show you around my playground.

Aren't praire dogs on some endangered list? I thought it was illegal to shoot them east of I-25, and most of the counties that border I-25 on the west.

Thanks guys I will have to get in touch with you all once I hit town.

H&H from what I've read on here it sounds as though you have a ton of stories and impressonable youth would love to hear:D

One more question:
Would a 17hmr be of any use or is most of the hunuting done at ranges exceeding its limits?

Gracias

Keep in mind you'll be looking at a non-resident small game license fee.

No idea, but a quick google for Colorado Division of Wildlife ought to get you there fairly quick.

No resident fee is 40.25 which is the same for a non resident fishing. Thanks
