Coloring brass

I know a fellow use to sell the following device to mark the cases with a Mark A Lot marker. I think it is pretty clever. Since it isn't available, I plan to make one for myself out of scrap 2" x 4". I haven't used it so I am not sure how much time it would take to mark rounds, but thought I would mention it.

Hope that helps.

marking

bullseye shooters mark their cases and have for at least 30 yrs.
magic markers and dykem will work also the bingo players have a marker that presses on the paper but would be good on cases.I use blue on my 45 and my SIL used red.others used black or made a X .

I have also done it like the rounds in this old pic, instead of marking primers, but I generally just mark primers now, as posted earlier.

Sharpie here.... I use a dot for some loads, an x for others (very small lots, since X's are harder to make on a primer), and some get a line down the head after being put in a box (super easy)... different colors if necessary...

I am going to consider a device to put lines on the sides now though.... shooting USPSA or IDPA it would be nice to get MY brass back.... not that I don't trust the habits of other reloaders, but, well, I don't trust the habits of other reloaders.... lol

How about carbon coating with a sputterer?!! :D We use a carbon coater at work with a polished brass disk so we know how thick the carbon layer is.

Interference colors on polished brass (thickness in nm):

15 Orange
20 Indigo red
25 Blue
30 Bluish green
35 Green blue
40 Pale green
45 Silver gold

Seriously though, a Sharpie works just fine. I put a series of dots around the rim of the case head like so and they wipe off easily with rubbing alcohol.

I use colors and symbols with a sharpie on the heads for ID. Also a wide sharpie and a twist of the cartridge and a wide line around most of the casing will show at a good distance. I use black, blue or red ones for the stripe. I have used machinists die and a long Q tip to swab the heads in a loading block also but it comes off harder.
