COLT 1849 31 cal.
Replica
I found among my father’s ancient belongings. It seem unfired and in new condition. It is a replica (as under the rammer in the barrel there is an inscription stating that it is a 31 caliber A. Uberty, Italy for black powder only). On the rear of the trigger guard, where it meets the frame on the left side of the gun, it is also marked 31 caliber.
It is a five shot percussion revolver that bring images of the gold rush as I hefted it. The short barrel is octagonal and the cylinder is engraved with a stagecoach scene, looking very much like a miniature 1851 Navy.
The pyramid-brass front sight is quite small but matches properly with the miniature notch in the hammer. I very much wanted to shoot it, especially when I also found like what seems to be the proper black powder flask,
but the round balls by Hornady I found in the shelf are marked 32 cal. (.310) and drop right to the bottom of the chambers (charging holes?). It seems that they are to be used with a patch in a muzzle-loading rifle and are not for pistol use.
The little gun is so pristine and immaculate that I changed my mind in dirtying the little jewel with black powder gunk. I well remember in my younger years when my father made me clean his others black powder shooting irons; it is not an enjoyable pastime.
Regardless, it is still a fascinating little piece to admire.
