Hey everyone! I just created an acciunt because ive done much research but still need some help. I bought a colt 1903 that was built in 1919. In the late 1920s at some point in production colt changed the hammer and the firing pin in an attempt to make the gun more “drop safe”. They did this by adding a half cock notch in the hammer amd shortening the firing pin. If i changed out these two items would it accomplish my goal of making the gun more drop safe or would i have to change more parts out? Also if its just the two parts that must be changed does anyone know where i can get the shorter firing pin for a 1903?

A quick search of ebay for '1903 colt hammer' shows plenty with the half cock notch, likewise "1903 colt firing pin" for the newer version.

I added these to both of my 1903s (a 1910 and 1911) and have no qualms about carrying them anywhere.

Now do you carry with a round in the chamber after you changed out both those parts?

Absolutely I do, I think they're as safe as any series 70 1911, maybe a bit more so as nothing can whack the hammer.

Ok and the last question i have is what length is the newer firing pin if they shortened it? Assuming they did so mine would be longer than the 1920s and later versions.

Did you also have to change the sear out since you used a new and different hammer? What part of the firing pin did you change out the front or rear part? My research is bringing me so many different results but youre the only who ive heard from who has actually done what i am trying to do.
