Hello Gentlemen, like the tilte says,
for a combat situation which pistol will you choose, the colt 1911 or the sig sauer p226??

I only whant to buy one centerfire gun, and it will be one of these two, both feel good in my hands.

so which of this two is more reliable, and last longer????

if you were me which would you get???

my best regards to all of you

Both of the Colt 1911s I purchased new in the last year have been flawless.

Can’t tell you which to buy, just my experience. It comes down to personal preference. Both are fine weapons, good luck and enjoy.

Big difference in those two pistols. I really like 1911s but I have to say I think there's a much better chance that the 226 will be 100% reliable out of the box. I also think the price of paratice ammo should be take into consideration some as well.

I carried a Colt of some sort daily for close to 30 years. Owned probably 15+ of them over the years and kept 3 Colts when I got rid of the rest of my 1911's. They are the true 1911, the rest are copies.

That said, I now have 15 SIG's, two of which are P226's in 357SIG. A SIG P220 started the transition for me, and I was quickly hooked. No more fooling around trying to get the gun I wanted, "after" I bought it. With the SIG's, I get out of the box just what I need. No break in, no upgrading or fiddling, just a 99.9% reliable gun.

If your considering looking at the SIG, I'd also look at the P229. Its very similar in size to the P226, but slightly different. The grips are slightly different, and both have their own feel, which you may prefer one over the other. I actually like the feel of the P226's better than my P229's, but I choose to carry the P229's, as they seem to come up just that tad better for me, and I seem to shoot them just a little bit better for some reason. Both are great guns regardless.

The Sig is a fine modern gun, with stamped parts....the Colt 1911 is a fine gun, period.....I carry a no-frills 1911 with no bells, whistles, extended doo-dads to poke/prod/snag....this is a current production gun, and it makes many newer guns look shabby and crude....this one was refinished by 1911 restoration specialist Bill Adair to replicate a 1911 refurbed for WWII...

That is a good looking 1911 mtngunr, who produced it if you don't mind me asking?

I personally would look at three things:

1) What fits my hand the best
2) What am I planning on using it for, combat can me a lot of things
3) What is my budget

The budget issue will help you pare down the list of 1911's available to your ($300ish to a whole lotta $$$$$). Also it'll help you choose a caliber, 1911's come chamber in almost all center fire cartridges if you're willing to pay enough for one. 10mm isn't cheap even if you've already got the gun. 226's come in 9, .40, and .357 sig as far as I know.

Secondly by combat do you mean IPSC/IDPA/USPA/3 gun, deploying as a PMC to the sand box, home defense, concealed carry, etc? Both guns can work well for both, but it's intended roll helps flesh things out. PMC usually means more rounds on tap, and in a local caliber is better. You can get a double stack 1911 in 9mm if you want to go that route, or you can get a stock P226. Going to be doing personal protective work, with a lot of work around vehicles? .357 sig, .38 super, 10mm etc are all gonna be good rounds in that case.

Finally and most importantly does one feel better then the other? Does one point better then the other? If so then go with that. If not then the other factors play into it more.

Reliability is a toss up. In general a Sig is going to run better out of the box then a 1911. How much better is up to debate, possibly a little, possibly a whole lot. On the other hand if your putting down a couple of grand for a 1911 the sucker will run. Once you get the kinks worked out of either gun, both will run like clocks. Both have a stupidly reliable design, and both have examples out there with 100K's of rounds through them.

Same thing on durability. Both guns will likely still shoot just fine when you're dead. Take care of them and they will last you a life time.

For my money I went with a P226 in .357 Sig. The 1911 platform just doesn't fit my hand as well. For me if I want a .45 a P220 Elite or a G21SF is what fits my hand the best.

Thanks for the compliment I was fishing for (wink)....it's a Colt O1911, about 2yrs old, now....the OEM guns only lack attention to finish detail to duplicate older guns, and Bill Adair took care of that part....shoots 1"/25yds with UMC ball....

I have two M1911s and they are both now "safe queens." I'll take my Sig P226 9mm "BlackWater Edition" any day of the week.

i grew up with the 1911 and it feels the most "natural in my hand. i carried a Commander as a duty weapon and used an Officer's ACP for off-duty carry.

the Sig 226 finally replaced the 1911 as my duty gun, because it requires less attention to be ready for use after being subjected to hours/days/weeks exposed to the elements with minimal care.

the 226 doesn't require the attention the 1911 does and 9mm ammo has improved dramactically over the years

I have the Sig 1911 Platinum Carry 45acp and love it...accurate and carries nicely...so the best of both worlds...I did change the trigger and grips to Wilson trigger and rosewood grips to eliminate the retro look...fine weapon

RobMoore, I disagree I think the 226 is perfectly concealable.

My duty gun is a G34 with a TLR-1 mounted on it. I carry the same gun off duty with no real trouble. A good polo shirt and the right holster make all the difference. If you insist on wearing tight t-shirts or the like then yeah the 1911 will conceal better, but other then that I think the 226 isn't at a disadvantage. The rounded shape of the weapon, with no major square contours (unlike a Glock) make it conceal fairly easily for a full size duty gun.

Remember most folks don't see a lump under a shirt as a gun, rather as a cell phone, black berry, etc. Us gun folks go the other way. Shoot the last time I had lunch with my parents, my dad had his polo untucked and I started to wonder when he got his CHL. No was just his phone and other stuff on his belt.

I agree.

The P226 is actually a Commander sized gun, along with the P220. Realistically, most all full sized hand guns vary little when compared together, and as Jenrick said, with the right holster and dress, you can easily hide just about all of them.

Its not just the length that makes the P226 harder to conceal. It is the grip IMHO. The double stack 9mm is big by todays standard in the grip. It was made to be a military side arm. Conceal was not a factor high capacity was.

The 1911 was designed to carry 7+1 of 45 ACP but is is still very slim in the grip. This allows on to wear it very close to the body thus making it easier to conceal.

If it were me with todays ammo prices I would get the P226 in 9mm. You will get almost double the numbers of rounds down range with the P226 9mm. This is a bigger factor than caliber choice. More range time more positive hits. Hits are what count.

Entirely correct. Thing is, maybe due to long experience, I can get those hits better with a 1911. The P226 is very likely more reliable out of the box, and I have a very nice example, courtesy of GGI. But the 1911 is still a better shooter for me.

Jim I agree more 1911s in the stable than anything else but 9mm is great for new shooters to cut their teeth on. I hope I am not assuming too much that the OP is a new shooter.

That is why I always recommend a 9mm. It is big enough to get the job done but at the same time is the cheapest to shoot. I cannot stress enough range time for newer shooters.

I also fancy both guns quite a lot; but I think the Sig will run more reliable overall, especially if any sort of rough treatment is thrown into the mix. That said, I don't think the Sig can match the 1911 in shootability (no other handgun comes close IMO), but you sure can practice more round-for-round due to the price difference. Can't go wrong with either gun though.

The Sig is a lot of gun for the money. It is the sidearm with which I am most accurate. I like 1911s, but IMO, it's no contest.

if you're not already set on these two. i think the CZ SP-01 feels better in the hand and is very shootable in 9mm...plus you get a choice of Condition 1 or DA/SA

9mmepiphany-

Actually I own the P226 and really love the thing, but I've heard great things about the CZ guns, maybe I'll add one someday.

Thanhyou so much gentlemen, for your coments and advices, I think I´ll pick the SIG P226 Black water.

I will think about it a couple of weeks before I go the Gun Store

I lean more towards the SIG even when I still like a lot the 1911, but I will think about it
