I've wrote on a few forums wanting to find a good 45 1911 in SS under 800. I've had a few people write back and tell me to check out the new Colt Rollmark. What can anyone tell me about this gun? Is their a model number or is it called just a Colt rollmark?? Also how does it compare with Springfield Armory or Kimber?? Thanks

While the Colt website will show the model numbers for the Series 80 in stainless, it won't define the term "New Rollmark". (Besides, the site is down at the moment).

The "rollmark" is simply the lettering on the slide, and it's called a rollmark because the machine that does it actually rolls the mark in. It's done after the polishing which is why the marks on some guns have raised edges.

The "New" part refers to the most recent style of the lettering. Through the Eighties and Nineties Colts had a rather large rollmark stating various things but usually a variation on MARK IV/ COLT with some smaller lettering below on the left side. IMO this was almost as hideous as the SW1911 :) In the last year or so the rollmark styling has been redone with smaller lettering that is more similar to Colts from prior to 1970. Some feel the change in the rollmark also marks an upswing in Colt quality. So by defining that you are after a "new rollmark" it means the gun is of recent production and more likely to be good out of the box than the Old Rollmarks, which are still available as New, Old-Stock.

Unfortunately it is hard to photograph the rollmarks and Colt's site sucks picture-wise. I think somebody did manage to get some decent pics, either here or over on 1911forum, so a search on rollmarks should turn up a pic.

I bought a new, NRM Colt Combat Commander last month and really like it. It is accurate, well finished inside and out, and so far has been RELIABLE. The reviews on the new Colts are generally excellent. I selected the Colt over other models of 1911s in the sub-$1000 price range from the major manufacturers. The first runner-up was the SW1911, but chose the Colt because the newer ones are hard to come by and have the attributes I was looking for. Eventually, I will buy a full size NRM Colt and the SW1911. Check out the 1911 forum where there is a lot of good information about different models of 1911s.

The guns in question are the Colt O1991 series. Colt made a number of improvements to these models about 2 years ago and changed the markings on the slide (the rollmarks), so people call them the "new roll mark" or NRM guns for short.

The Colt model numbers in question are O1991 (blue 5" barrel), O1091 (stainless 5" barrel) , O4691 (blue 4.25" barrel) and O4091U (stainless 4.25" barrel). They are about $570 for blued and $650 for stainless models.

You can read about all the variants here: http://www.colt.com/CMCI/1991.asp

You can read a review I wrote of the O1991 I owned here: http://www.pistolsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=13743

Here are the new slide markings on the O1991 series guns:
