This is one caliber which can be improved with hand loading. Factory loads are weaker than they were twenty-five years ago. the factories have all loaded 38 Super down slightly to 9MM pressures of around 35,000 PSI. The standard super load used to be a 130 Gr bullet @ 1300 FPS. Now, the same bullet is loaded to 1200 and they call THAT a +p load.
Cor-bon and other premium ammo companies still load the Super up to its potential, but you pay a premium price.
Personally, I love the down loaded, no stronger than a 9MM Largo looking stuff that passes for Super ammo these days. It works well in.... well.....a 9 MM Largo! I have a Star model Super A that loves the stuff.
Getting back to your original question, I have several boxes of plain Remington 130 gr ammo that I shoot for one reason. It is the cheapest factory loaded stuff I can find! Shooting this caliber is rather expensive unless you handload and even then it isn't cheap, if you use jacketed bullets.
If you can entertain the idea of shooting lead bullets you can cut your shooting costs in half. More accurately, if your GUN can entertain the thought.....some pistols just won't tolerate lead bullets. But i would give them a try. Properly cast (hard) they can be loaded to full velocity without leading and my Star shoots them quite accurately.
good shooting
