I know it's not a real popular caliber, but those of you that have one and don't reload what ammo do you use. Range ammo I'm using Remington UMC +P and defense loads CorBon Self Defense +P 125gr jhp.

I DO hand load, but I can also answer your question, as I have a decent sized stock of factory ammo for .38 Super as well.

I've got most of the major brands on hand other than CorBon. I've found that most all of it is pretty tame ammo compared to my hand loads. As a totally subjective thing, the Remington stuff seems the zippiest, but it all works in my experience. I have a quantity of Magtech factory stuff too, and have never had a problem with it either.

Take up hand loading and you'll love your .38 Super even more. :)

I use different brands of FMJ for range ammo - Aguila, Armscor, Remington, Fiocchi, whatever I've got. My carry load is Georgia Arms 124gr Gold Dot @ 1350fps.

This is one caliber which can be improved with hand loading. Factory loads are weaker than they were twenty-five years ago. the factories have all loaded 38 Super down slightly to 9MM pressures of around 35,000 PSI. The standard super load used to be a 130 Gr bullet @ 1300 FPS. Now, the same bullet is loaded to 1200 and they call THAT a +p load.

Cor-bon and other premium ammo companies still load the Super up to its potential, but you pay a premium price.

Personally, I love the down loaded, no stronger than a 9MM Largo looking stuff that passes for Super ammo these days. It works well in.... well.....a 9 MM Largo! I have a Star model Super A that loves the stuff.

Getting back to your original question, I have several boxes of plain Remington 130 gr ammo that I shoot for one reason. It is the cheapest factory loaded stuff I can find! Shooting this caliber is rather expensive unless you handload and even then it isn't cheap, if you use jacketed bullets.

If you can entertain the idea of shooting lead bullets you can cut your shooting costs in half. More accurately, if your GUN can entertain the thought.....some pistols just won't tolerate lead bullets. But i would give them a try. Properly cast (hard) they can be loaded to full velocity without leading and my Star shoots them quite accurately.

good shooting

Just burned a pile of Fiocchi...

Took pals and family out to the desert for a shooting reunion and a couple of everyone's favorites were the Colt and Llama .38 Supers with Fiocchi.

Not a single glitch, flat shooting, low recoil and accurate outa both guns.

Very happy.

I like most handload for it but I did get a deal on a bunch of Aguila some years back. I paid for loaded ammo about what brass was going for at the time. It worked fine but like others said, it is pretty mild. The brass loads fine too. :)

.38 Super is, unfortunately, one of those rounds that you pretty much have to shoot whatever you can find when it comes to factory ammunition.

.38 Super is a reloader's dream, and as others have said, to attain it's full potential and stay affordable, you must reload. 357 Sig performance, in a classic 1911 round.
