So I acquired a 80 series steel frame commander and made a note it was a 70 series gun as it lacked the firing pin safety and junk everyone loves.

I have always been told these are transitional guns , a 70 series frame and slide with a 80 series serial.

I am also told they lack any special value being that way.

What are your guys opinion on this matter?

I shoot both 70 & 80 and their is a small small difference. My Colt 80’s has a tiny take up then wall, my STI 70’s is just a wall.

Go shoot it and have a blast!

No special value of which I'm aware. Then again I don't acquire firearms as a monetary investment. I get them to shoot them, get them dirty, and put some wear and tear on them.

I see it that way as well, this was someone early ipsc pistol due to the trigger job and Bomar sights.

It is chambered in 9mm and most likely I will have the 9mm barrel welded and fitted and a 38 super barrel installed by clarks gunsmithing.

I like accurate guns

I think Colt has more inconsistent markings than any other gunmaker.
Frex, I have a Service Model Ace .22 with 70B centerfire serial number. There are corresponding SM numbered .45s. It does not confer added dollar value. Nor does yours.

No special value IMHO. A friend once bought a new Colt factory 70 Series replacement slide. Externally marked '70 Series, etc., but internally a series 80. Then the reintroduced 70 Series Colts with some 80 Series parts; firing pins, extractors, etc.

BTW, I have an old Govt. Model Colt accurized by Clark many years ago using the weld, squeeze and peen method. The old welded up and refitted factory barrel still shoots great; 10 shots in just over 2" at 50 yards from a machine rest.

I like accurate guns too.
