First off let me say that as far as assault rifles go I don't know much (lingo or mechanics) but I was looking at purchasing an AR style rifle and came accross a Colt AR-15 with an H-bar, tri-pod & a high powered scope. What I am wanting to know is what is an "H-bar" what does it do (its purpose) and also what would be a good or reasonable price for one?

Knowing the price is a big thing because I do not know a great deal about rifles (as stated earlier), I tend to stick to handguns.

Thanks.

H-Bar stands for "Heavy Barrel". This is not the bull barrel found on varmint rigs, but is the rifle Colt made/makes to fill the "civilian" target shooter's niche. These, at least the older ones, are pretty accurate rifles.

Also, the gun probably has a bi-pod (2 legs) rather than a tri-pod (3 legs). These can be useful for shooting from the prone position or from a bench - although you will get a number of opinions as to how useful these really are.

I think these, if they are the post-ban rifles, go for $750 and up used.

HBAR means it has a heavy barrel - I have one I bought in '97 and it has a big scope and bipod on it. I rarely shot it, I guess because of the weight. Then I got a Colt 6721 and like that much better. What is it worth? Depends on the scope and the condition of the gun. I'd look around GunBroker and places like that and try and get an idea of the current value.

The HBAR originally meant Heavy Barreled Automatic Rifle. That was the version Colt proposed for the Squad Automatic Weapon or SAW back in the late 60s early 70s.
