So you want to buy an AR-15, huh?

Iff'n you do go the Colt route, take your time and shop around as prices swing wildly-you should be able to get a 6920 for under $1300 if you shop wisely.

Best thing I can say 'bout the Colt is they should have 'em debugged by now :what:, price (if you get for under $1300) and resale value (anything with a rampant pony on it brings bucks it seems).

'Course, somebody in here will point you to THE CHART I'm sure-interesting reading, but not the be all/end all some think it to be...
although I think you ARE required to bow whenever perusing THE CHART! :D  ;) :banghead:

If you are looking for a 6920 you should be able to find it for $1100 plus. Here is an example:

More like $1200 minus (price when I looked was $1199).
It would help if the OP would at least post what state he's located in-folks might be able to steer him to a local shop etc?

FWIW-my last AR was a 6920 for $1251.99 plus tax. Didn't really need another one, but they were on sale, and can ya really go wrong with Colt?
Regular price at the police supply house where I bought was $1700-they were on sale for $1250. I see stuff on the 'Net all the time with a good price, but by the time you add shipping, FFL fee, etc (if they have 'em in stock) they always seem to ease up to around the $1250 mark?

If the OP lives near a larger city, he may have luck finding someone locally selling 'em at a decent price-fer myself, living in a small town, pickings are slim.

Well, RR is correct, there are better weapons out there.

unless your talking about just the DI AR-15 world, where Colts are hard to beat.

I always wondered, how the same people that say that a Mid Length AR is so important, recommend the carbine gassed 6920.

I find that..... odd.

And probably means that the mid length is not as important a feature as assumed.

Armalite never really got into production, they actually had the first ones made in Holland. The whole design got sold to Colt for production - just like the Masada was sold to Bushmaster.

Colt probably keeps the price up to justify contract price comparisons. They run about $1100 each on the government nickel with the KAC handguard, which is a $300 option.

That makes a stock handguard equipped M4 type Colt about $800 retail, hmm, the numbers are a bit off, aren't they? Add that civilian Colts in the past were known to substitute non-milspec parts. Just as good, just not inspected part by part, more like batched.

What the new LE division is doing, only a teardown and inspection by experts will tell. Colt won't. It might change next month with a different supplier anyway.

Colt doesn't make junk, they have a good rep, and Customer Service is there to fix the rare problems.

You can get a rifle, of equal or better quality, for a few hundred dollars less.

Are you technically proficient enough to clean the rifle? If so, you can buy the upper and lower halves seperately, pin them together yourself (no more complicated than breaking down for cleaning) and save yourself a few hundred dollars.

Bravo company makes rifles that are at least as good, many argue better, than Colt. They've kept their prices low and their quality top tier.

Order the following, make sure you add on the BCM Bolt Carrier and Charging Handle when you order the upper reciever though, and buy your choice of rear sight. The one linked is simple, light, and strong, but pretty much any will do:

$360 http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Lower-Receiver-Groups-M4-AR15-s/117.htm
$580 http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-mid-16.htm
$70 http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Daniel-Defense-A1-5-Fixed-Rear-Sight-p/dd-11002.htm

Total cost is just over $1000, after shipping and FFL.

BCM= or exceeds Colts standards. I have one Colt. Just for the sheer coolness of having the real thing. No shame in admitting that.

But my more custom builds hover around BCM, Larue, or Rainier Arms uppers. The lowers I build from parts myself. Many ambi and grip options I insist on.

Colt was my first. Have a RRA. Love them both. And I'll have some others before I'm done, but I have to admit, I love owning the Colt. And to tell you the truth, I couldn't tell you now exactly what I paid for it. 1199, 1299, or 1399. I just don't remember, nor care. I own a colt. It's a wonderful weapon and I've never once wish I had bought something different. But to each their own. Like I said, I have a rock river, and will own others sooner or later.

Buying a Colt AR means never have to explain why you feel your AR is "as good as a Colt"

For equal price I would rather own a Colt.... however I would rather shoot a Rock River.

Colts are good guns. The carbine sight radius is an unneccessary handicap for iron sight use. The grenade launcher cut out in the barrel just looks rediculous on a civilian gun. The trigger pull quality is poor and while it may have its purpose in a combat gun, it is hard to accept in a sporting rifle.

Those things aside I like them. I used to own one and may again some day... but for now, as I said, I prefer to shoot a Rock River.
