Colt Combat Commander????? Yes or No

Was in one of the local gun stores today.

I found a Colt Combat Commander, Stainless Steel, New in box.

This gun has been customized by JB Custom??????

The front of the grip has a stipling(sp) instead of checkering. The rear of the slide has lines cut. It has MMC adjustable sights.

Sides of slide polished stainless, the top is matte stainless.

It has a set of carbon fiber grips.

It is a series 80 gun.

It is absolutely gorgeous.

They are asking $999.95, supposedly the receipt in the box says the guy paid $1200+.

Is this a good gun? Has anyone heard of JB Custom?

What about the price?

I need a 1911.

Seems a tad high w/o being able to visually inspect it. How's the trigger? How many mags? Is it $999.95 out the door?

Steve, is it worth it to you? To h*ll with others think. If you like it and as nice as you said, get it. I have past up a few deals because I could of found it a bit cheaper or someone had told me it isn't worth it. Big mistake. Again, if it is worth it to you, you'll never regret it.

The gun is absolutely new.

Some guy bought it brand new, sent it to JB Custom, and had the work done to it. It then was put in his safe.


He recently put up for sale:

Para Ordinance P-12 & P13 Limited Edition SS Guns (NIB)
S&W TSW Tactical, also customized and New in box
Plus 3-4 others.



It's had a full blown trigger job (new trigger, etc).

I'm more curious about how well built the Colt Series 80 Combat Commander is.

Currently, I don't have a 1911. I've had a Norinco, Kimber Pro Carry, Kimber Government and Charles Daly.

I was thinking about stepping up and spending the money(when I've got it all) on a Les Baer or similiar gun. Then I happened upon this one.

Would I be better off spending the extra $500-800 on a Baer or Ed Brown?

The problem is, who did the custom work? Until you can get a reading on the quality of the work, the price is pretty moot.

Several years back there was a 'smith that I knew who got rave reviews in a leading gun rag. His work was not up to par and most of the locals knew it.

Once you figure out who worked on the gun, you'll have a better idea of the relative worth.

Hold Up!

Greeting's All,

Don't buy it. Instead look for an older series 70 Colt
Combat Commander with the blued finish. I think you
would enjoy it much better; especially if you were
lucky enough to find a Colt Lightweight Commander
with the CLW serial prefix! They are getting really
tough to find in LNIB condition; so expect the price
to be quite high.

Seems High ,Its kinda of weird that a guy would have a gun fixed up and sell it without shooting it.

Quibble: Any gun owned once is never NIB. Moreso when it has been modified. That said, sounds like a nice piece!

Good advice from guys aoubt knowing who did the work. Let the buyer beware is a good thing to keep in mind.

Well, I've finally found the gunsmith who did the work.

According to some guys over at 1911forum, he is very good at his job.

I'm going to contact him and find out what he exactly did to this gun.

Then, I may have to make an offer..............damn it's a beautiful gun.
