Hey guys, I was hoping y'all could help me ballpark a value for this Colt Commander .38 super. I don't know it's history, but I am trying to figure it out over the next few days. Thanks!
Congratulations. I have owned one of these pistols, in the lightweight variety, for many years. It has consistantly performed as I expected. After about 5000 rounds it did have one smoke stack but that was my fault since I had not cleaned it in a while. No other problems. I have heard that the .38 Super has been adopted by the practical pistol types because it is very hard shooting but with minimum recoil. It can be a little inaccurate due to head spacing problems but that can be overcome with I think a Bar-sto barrel that heads on the case mouth. The experts can let you know how to make it more of a tack driver. I've been very happy with mine and will not ever sell it. Enjoy.
I'd need to see better photos but you have one thing going for you already (or against you) in that if you're to sell it, the best place is a southern border state (though If you're buying, the competition is fierce). These things are wildly popular with the Mexican/Mexican-American crowd and in that case command more money than a .38 Super in general, and a pimped one in particular will get elsewhere in the country.
As far as a number - better photos for condition and quality are really needed and greater explanation of your physical impressions of the pistol as well.
Also, a very good photo of a fired factory loaded case could provide insight as well.
Looks as if the slide has been nickled and mated to the alloy frame. Aftermarket grips. Gold wash hammer and trigger it looks like. Carried and shot a good bit. I note some freckling on the slide stop and safety, there is likely more of it. Because of the alterations and condition you might get $600. for it out my way. That could be lower if the internals have been fiddled with. In Texas I'm not sure.
I see a number of things that would make me slow on the draw on that gun.
Slide nickel plated; GI hammer and thumb safety, maybe trigger; all gold plated and then used enough to wear the plating. Plated pewter grips likewise plated and worn.
A pimp special that has seen a good deal of use.
