First of all, were any Colt D frame revolvers (Detective Special, Cobra, Agent, etc.) ever made with three inch barrels?

Second, does anyone know the weights of the Det.Spl., Cobra and Agent? Specifically, how much lighter is the Agent than the Cobra. Couldn't be much. Anyone know?

With all the expertise on Colts I've seen here lately, someone surely knows these answers.

Thanks.

Bill

Both the Detective Special and the Cobra were made with 3" barrels.

While I've never heard of an Agent with anything but 2" barrels, as always with Colt, anything is possible, since Colt would do special orders on demand.

Weight depends on the version. The later, heavy, shrouded barrel models will weight a little more, and rubber, wood, or smaller "service" type wood grips will cause the actual weight to vary slightly.

According to Colt, the heavy barrel models were: Cobra 17 oz. The Detective Special 21 oz.

The first model Cobra had a longer, full profile butt, while the Agent had the short "stubby" grip frame the later "D" frame guns had.
The early Cobra would weight a minuscule amount more than the Agent.

The later short frame Cobra and the Agent were the same gun except for barrel markings and grips.
As such, the only difference in weight would be related to the type of grips used.

Greeting's Sir-

Yes, there are known too be some D-frame Colts with 3" barrels in
existence. I had a very rare 3" Colt Cobra in .22LR, way back 'bout
1975. These D- frame Colts (2nd series 1947-1972) weighed in as
follows: Agent = 14 ozs, Cobra = 15 ozs, and the Dick Special came
in at 21 ozs. I still have a '66 model, and a '71 model Dick Special;
and both are in really good shape~!:D But, the 3" Cobra is long
gone and thats too bad; cuz it could have helped send my 19
month old grand daughter to college~!

Thanks, Dfaris and Dan, for sharing your considerable expertise. Guess I'll pick up a three inch D frame right after I get those hen's teeth. :)

Not to hijack a thread but I have a Nickel Detective that has a long grip frame, unshrouded, serial #7933XX Would this be considered a 1st or 2nd issue? Thanks
