Does anybody know what the unloaded weights are for the classic Colt snubs- Detective Special, Cobra and Agent? I am just trying to compare them to the comparable J-frame offerings. Thanks!

I have several Colt snubby revolvers and ...

here are their weights based on my calibrated chemistry scale. The Detective special 21 oz, Cobra 16 oz, Agent 16 oz , magnum carry 21.5 oz , Lawman 2" mark 111 33 oz , Python 21/2 " 38.5 oz .

The Agent was introduced in 1962, and was identical to the Cobra being made at that time, except the frame's butt was shortened as were the stocks. In 1966 the Cobra frame was shortened but the wrap-around stocks remained the same size. At this point both revolvers were identical except for their respective stocks, with the Agent being less then 1 oz. lighter. In about 1972 the "pencil barrels" were replaced with the heavier shrouded style on both revolvers. At a later date Colt switched to oversized rubber stocks that added about 1 1/4 ozs. to their respective weights.

interesting

I just put my post 72 DS on the kitchen scale and it says 20.1 oz

one would think that it would be heavier than a pre 72

Diamondback snub came in at 21.8

both have factory grips

Old Fluff, the Agent was introduced in 1955. I own one from 1956. Go to Proof house.com, you can look up the dates of all their revolvers.

According to my book on Colt revolvers...

The cobra was first issued in 1950, and the Agent in 1955.

I checked five reference books after the question concerning Agent production came up. Three say 1962 at around serial number 122,500LW or higher. Two said 1955 with no serial number given. We can probably confirm the earlier date if someone has an Agent with a serial number between 33,900LW and 122,500LW.

I also checked other references and found conflicting dates ...

on the first issue of the Agent. I called Colt 1-800-962-COLT and they gave me the date as 1962 for the first issue. They said the Cobra was 1950 , but apparently my book is incorrect and "Oldfuff" is correct on the Agent issue date. My Blue book by Fjestad is also incorrect as listing the first issue Agent date as 1955 as well. Hmmm, what else are they wrong about.

While the Old Fuff is never wrong... :what: :uhoh: :D

I don't think we should jump to any conclusions until we see if anyone actually has an Agent with a serial number under 122,500LW. The 1955 date had to come from somewhere. :scrutiny:

Conventional wisdom isn't always right. :uhoh:

I have an agent which dates to 1956. They started in 1955. OK here is my serial number for my agent, 545XXLW, it only has 5 digits before the lw. This gun dates to 1956 and it is an agent, grip size and name and I still use it.

Boy!! I am going to start charging you for... well... ah... "Professional Advise.

except for that full size DAO revolver thing I have never seen you wrong

But if you start to charge me I will quit publicly fawning and then folks won't know you have groupies

Ah, I must have... what do you call them... "groupies??"

Because they all want me to write a book, but they can't agree on what the subject should be... :neener:

Snooperman I am still trying to understand why colt would tell you that 1962 date when clearly my gun has a five digit number which date to 1956.

back then it was before lawyers and insurance companies screwed up society and people could drink a couple of stiff ones at lunch before heading back to the office

So that is my theory, a clerical error born of bourbon

BTW, a great philosopher once said

"Lawyers are like flesh eating bacteria feeding on the tissue of our society, leaving it rotting, putrid and necrotic."

What a wordsmith!!!

Cocojo , perhaps you can call them with that serial number...

and they will give it to you staight from their records. The number is 1-800-962-COLT. All I can say for sure is that based on the number of books that I have on hand there are conflicts between them as to the first issue date of the agent. I am going to call again , perhaps another person will answer and give me more info. I will let you know if it is different from what I was told yesterday.

Cocojo, I just called Colt with your serial number...

and talked to Kara. She said your gun is not an Agent but a Cobra, courier, or aircrewman, made in 1956, and that your barrel is an "AGENT" barrel made after 1962. It is not an original barrel or Agent gun . You may call her to confirm this at 1-800-962-COLT and ask for customer service and to speak to Kara. She has access to all of this and is quite knowledgeble and very pleasant as well.
