I have a chance to get a Detective for 400.00. But the blueing is worn a good bit. Or do I spend the same for a taurus ultralite. Witch will handle better.

You have a chance to get a Colt double action revolver for the same price as a Taurus and you took the time to send a question? If I were in the market for a carry .38, I would jump on that with both feet. Blueing is irrelevant to operation as long as the lockup is tight and trigger pull good.
Unless you are planning to run hundreds of rounds a month through it, get the Colt. It will never lose value. They don't make them any more.
Of course, finding a gunsmith who knows Colts' revolvers is getting harder these days, but a Colt is a Colt is a Colt. I might trade a Colt for a Korth, but not many other revolvers are as fine.
On the other hand, if you are planning on running hundreds of rounds a month through your revolver, consider a Ruger over the Taurus. While substantially heavier, it will stand up to the use.

Yes I do. I also reload there are so many people here that shoot alot and have many different guns i thought that i could get a little info here. THANK YOU

If that Colt works properly you should jump on that deal immediately. $400 is a good price for a Colt DS. The bluing is not all that important.

Buy the Colt and put it back, then buy the Taurus too and use it for carry. I have ended up with a couple and they are fine little pistols. Same with Rossi. Never would have thunk it 20 years ago.

I wouldn't jump too quickly to get the Colt.
The Detective Special is a fine revolver, and I treasure mine. However the mentioned blue wear may indicate considerable use, and then it's likely the gun needs some attention. Finding QUALIFIED gunsmiths is not easy, and parts are getting difficult to find, especially for earlier production. Because of the way they were individually hand-fitted, used parts - taken from another revolver may not work, if they lack material where its needed to be fitted in a different one.
A used Detective Special at $400 is a good buy only if it doesn't need any additional attention. Before I bought what appeared to be a somewhat worn example I would make very sure that the wear didn't extend beyond the finish.
