I hope of our Colt experts could help me with a question. How many Colt Double Eagles were manufactured with factory adjustable sights similar to the Gold Cup. Is this a much rarer model of the Double Eagle? This pistol was purchased factory new with these sights. Thanks for your help.

Apparently not very many Double Eagles were produced with adjustable sights. I was unable to find such a configuration in my reference books. One book listed four or five DE variations, but no adjustable sights. An exploded diagram shows no adjustable sights as an option. I would not doubt such a pistol's existence though. A call to Colt may yeild a bit of information.

The real question is whether it means anything. The Colt Double Eagle is not really a sought after pistol. In fact it is a pistol most Colt afficianados would like to forget. Having one with adjustable sights is kind of like having a Ford Pinto in lime green with a fuzzy pink interior. Yeah, it's different, but it doesn't mean it's desirable as a collectible gun. If it shoots well for you, enjoy it.

Now if anyone is interested in a very unique tabby cat with one eye and a broken tail..........

Xavierbreath: Thanks for the reply. If you look in Fjeasted's(sp?) several issues ago, it mentioned the DE with adjustable sights. I agree with your opinion of this gun, but checking a web site like Gunbroker shows the price to have doubled since I bought this thing a few years ago. Just got curious since it's now a safe queen.

It seems that the Double Eagle was really getting slammed badly for quite a few years. It was kind of the red headed step child of Colt, and nobody wanted them. That is still somewhat the case. Since it is a Colt, the value will increase, especially if you got into it cheaply during the time it was bashed. It will eventually become a pistol that is sought by collectors, as all old Colts become. When that happens, the price will increase even more. It just might not happen in our lifetime. :D

A quick scan of Auction Arms and Gun Broker shows these pistols at the $650-750 range with a few actual bids in the $650 area. I recall seeing these pistols gathering dust with $350 tags a few years back, so perhaps their time has come........

Why all the negative talk about the double eagle? I have a 10mm model and it is a very well made pistol. Just because the gun market is very conservative and doesn't like new things doesn't mean that it is a bad pistol. That is why it didn't go over. Remember when Glock first came on the market? They didn't go over very well either at first.
Colt Double Eagle 1990-1996 :(

I have both a 45acp and 10mm. They are gen2 with the spring retaining clip under the grip. Unlike my model 70 and 80 1911 thier front sites have never flown off. Also both have never failed me and are very accurate out of the box.

Colt people hated them because colts are supposed to be single action only.
The SA customer base hated them and Colts legendary head up thier @ss marketing sealed this guns fate before they hit the market

I have one in 45ACP, officer model with full grip so uses regular GM size magazines. Been dependable in shooting, not a great DA trigger but decent SA and accurate. Definitely a keeper. Yes, I also have half dozen Glocks and on other end , a SA 1911 loaded, Colt Gold Cup Trophy, Delta Elite 10mm, S&W 1076, Beretta 92, Paras and revolvers in every flavor from 357, 44 mag, 454 Casul, S&W 625 & 610, etc.

So the Colt Double Eagle is a keeper. I like good guns and am not fanatical about any particular breed. Each have different characteristics and I accept them for what they are
