Anybody know how to get an approximate manufacture date on a Colt Mk. IV Series 80 1911 without having to pay Colt $100?

SN is SS1211x (names changed to protect the innocent, yadda yadda)

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I know it was likely somewhere between 1983 and 1988 because it's a Series 80 and still had the collet bushing. Just curious if I can get a more accurate (maybe to the year) without asking Colt.

Just call them, they wont charge you to get just the date of manufacture. I did exactly that for my series 80 stainless government model, and as it turns out, we were both manufactured in 1989 :)

Mine is serial numbered SS4372X

Wow. I wasn't expecting that (from the website, it looked like they only offered formal letters, etc.). The customer service folks just asked the SN and gave me the date right there.

1985 for anyone wondering.

I like finding good customer service these days.

I had that same refreshing feeling when I called them myself. In fact, I've recently made customer service calls to Colt, Springfield Armory, and Mossberg, and all three were absolutely amazing in how well I was treated and the efficiency and speed with which they handled my requests.

Things are looking up I suppose?

They will tell you over the phone the vintage of any colt. The only time they charge is if you want the letter and they then also tell you a bunch of neat stuff like where they actually shipped the gun originally and so on. Good to have with fine Pythons, or 1911s or collectable Colt hand guns.
