Ok today I picked up beautiful colt police positive from a small pawn shop here in FL. It is a 1957 manu, and bright shiny nickel plating. One section has minor pitting above the right trigger guard. I want to hit it with four ought steel wool and then break free the hell out it.

My question is will the 0000 steel wool hurt the nickel ? I know it won't hurt blue or stainless, but this is my first nickel gun.

Your thoughts?

OOOO can dull (if polished) but not hurt a nickel finish. Important to note that pitting with nickel is "bottom-up" and a characteristic of the finishes' porosity. While it won't help with pitting, I've found (hand) buffing using Flitz does a great overall job on polished nickel weapons.

I'd second the motion on trying Flitz first. Steel wool would only mar or scratch up the nickel plate, leaving the lower layer of copper plate exposed to more erosion and damage. Flitz is supposed to be non-abrasive and should also leave behind a layer of corrosion protection after it's been applied.

flitz and a soft clean cotton cloth.

I use it on blued guns that have a little rust and oxidation, and on nickle, and stainless steel. Be gentle and only rub till you have removed the dirt and corrosion. Then finish with a soft clean cloth.

Don't use steelwool. Flitz is fine.

When you clean the gun, be sure, if you use a cleaner with amonia, to not let it come in contact with the pitted area.

You have a nice gun. The Police Positive is one of my all time favorite .38's.
