Colt Woodsman Match Target

So this evening I went into my dealers to order a Super redhawk in 454.

Intead i purchased a Series 1 woodsman match target. I had won a gift certificate to the shop so all said and done i spent $300 out of pocket.

The pistol is in mint condition and barely looks fired. Plus it came with a second factory magazine. The only down size is the previous owner had special high speed low drag custom bullseye grips made for it and it does not have the factory originals. SO if any one knows someone with a set I would appreciate the heads up.

I will post pics tommarow after i pick it up.

PS when i post the pics please dont laugh at the horribly ugly grips.

I'm sure the total price was a good deal more than that $300 you spent out of pocket.
I have a 3rd series Match Target but not all that familiar with the first series. Is that the Bullseye model that came with the elephant ear grips ?
Good luck with buying some of those. I once saw a mint condition pair go for $1300 on E-Bay.

But don't be surprised if a real set of 1st Series Match Target elephant-ear grips cost you more then you paid for the gun.

They were delicate, and awful lot of them got broke over the years, so they are in very short supply now.

Waiting for your pics! I had a Woodsman Match Target in the 70s. Great pistol and I still regret selling it.

The Woodsman is a great pistol -- mine was made in 1938 and is the most accurate handgun I own.

Well here is a crappy cell phone pic. I am no way shape or form into the photography hobby yet so sorry. Maybe in a few years or 30 i might pick it up but for now I will continue to buy and shoot guns.

So any way with the research I have done This pistol is a Series 1 Match Target. Serial Num MT87XX Which puts production in 1940. It came with 2 magazines one with Match target stamped on the bottom, the other just has colt woodsman.

This pistol has the horizontal lines on the back of the mainspring housing which shows it will handel high velocity ammo. The trigger is smooth and the blue is deep and rich.

It has some small handeling marks near the muzzel and main spring houseing. Also some light scratches under the grips.

I now need to find a set of aftermarket or repo grips so i can shoot it comfortably. If any one can point me in the right direction as of witch model grips will or will not fit. I would appreciate it.

I need to start saving again not only for the elephant ear grips but also for the ruger i didnt order.

I have some other 22 match pistols but I agree with you guys the colts are the neatest and best ones to collect. Did not really start buying colts untill like 4 yeas ago but do run across a nice one about every 6 months or so.

Herretts will make thumbrest target grips for a pre-war Woodsman.
They don't look like the factory but a lot better than what is on there now.

I'm another who sold his series 3 Match Target. Worse yet I saw one at a gun show recently with an asking price over ten times what I sold mine for in the late 80s.:banghead:

Well my gripsa have come in. I ordered the smooth finish English Walnut from Eagle grips.

Now i cant wait to get some time off to run her through her paces.
