COLUMBUS, Miss. - A woman accused of shoplifting could face more serious charges after allegedly causing minor injuries to an officer while trying to cut her own wrists and then attempting to escape, police said.

Authorities said Denise Jackson, 41, tried to cut herself with a box cutter as she was being arrested Monday at Leigh Mall. She was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for treatment.

Officer Sandford Harris, who suffered the superficial wounds while attempting to stop the woman from injuring herself, did not require treatment, authorities said.

Police Lt. Keith Worshaim said simple assault on a police officer and escape charges could be felonies, but that he was unsure how Jackson will be charged. The shoplifting charge is a misdemeanor.
