I thought about putting this in the general gun discussions, but since S&T has more of a focus on the Combat Mindset, I figured this would be a better place for it. It goes without saying that if it isn't, I trust the Mods will help me relocate it.

I have the opurtunity to get some extra credit in my Psychology class by writing a paper on just about anything as long as it is related to psychology, and I was thinking that I would write about the Combat Mindset/Warrior Mentality. Right now, the only sources I have are an article in SWAT magazine, and I was hoping y'all could point me in a direction. I'm especially interested in ways to cultivate the mindset.

Are there any books that are considered the "diffinitive work" on Combat Mindset? Is there anything that you "have to" consider when doing work with combat mindset? I'm not trying to get out of doing my research, so much as I'm trying to make sure I don't exclude or miss something that really needs to be included.

Thank you,

Chris "the Kayak-Man" Johnson

Chris, off the top of my head, LTC Dave Grossman's two books and Col. Jeff Cooper's Principles of Personal Defense come to mind.

Al,

Thanks, I did a search for Dave Grossman and found about 9 links on his site that I think will be very helpful. I've always been a fan of Cooper, but I haven't read a lot of his stuff, so I'll be sure to check out Principles of Personal Defence.

Thanks,

Ken Murray's book "Training at the Speed of Life: The Definitive Textbook for Police and Military Reality Based Training" provides and excellent discussion of psychological aspects of lethal force encounters and developing a winning mindset.

Musashi's Book of Five Rings--not to be read literally about swordsmanship and samurai-specific stuff, but just for general "Warrior Mindset", which is what you need to be ready and able to slip into when Mr. Predator decides he wants to prey on you or yours.

+1 on Cooper, and you might check out Ayoob's In The Gravest Extreme (added bonus: Mas is a member here, and despite my not having been formally one of his students I've always found him very accessible, even if schedules prevent him from responding as fast as he'd like).

Gabe Suarez' "The Comabtive Perspective", and Grossmans books--On Combat and On Killing (with On Comnat being the most useful)

Suarez has a DVD on Mind Set.
