Okay... The general consensus on the "Poofty Terrorist" thread is either "don't shoot, and gitcherbuttouttathere faster than Monty Python's knights can 'run away'" - or - "Go for slide lock."

    So... Time for a poll...

What would _you_ do when the doofus in front of you tries to blow himself (and you...) up, and turns out to be a dud doofus?

Like every place else these folks have struck, you aren't going to know they are there until your world manifests itself in a blinding flash of heat, light and shrapnel.

A good friend and I were talking about this exact same thing earlier today.

Imagine that you are sitting on a crowded bus/train, and the guy sitting next to you, clutching his carry-on luggage, reaches into an outer pocket and pulls out a wire. Sparks burn through the fabric yet there is no explosion.

I told my friend he could just be pulling his reserve shoot :what: :D

If something of this nature were to happen would it not be best to hold the unfortunate Islamic-robot until he can be whisked away to answer some questions... ?

I would shoot him anyways. He attempted to take me out and failed. Now I will attempt to ventillate his cranium a bit (maybe succeed; maybe fail. Hey it's a Taurus afterall :D ). Besides, it's good, clean, wholesome family fun to get one, two, or howevermany. But I sure wouldn't stick around long enough for the reports. I wouldn't want my name entered in some sort of wrongful death lawsuit - and that's no joke.

"Slide lock" means "shoot until the magazine's empty, the slide's locked back, and when you pull on the trigger, it just goes "click, click, click.""

Well, all except for the last part, unless you're in Hollywood.

None of those answers appeal to me.

I would want him alive if possible so that we could find his leadership's HQ and teach them what a bomb really is by introducing them to a 2000lb LGB.

    Hmmm...
If he pulls the pin and the bomb goes spitter sputter phssst then he's no longer an immediate threat.

If you plug him with a shot between the eyes it is possible that you won't be prosecuted - maybe.

In my estimation plugging the guy will accomplish little more than pissing off the feds and the local cops because you just iced an excellent source of information.

Your friends might think you were a hero but I doubt if law enforcement would. If they are the vindictive type then icing the guy might just be your ticket to hell.

I just found this thread while looking for another old thread... I'm thinking if the bomb turned out to be a dud, the terrorist may in fact be a credible threat. I'm reminded of the Israeli woman in the supermarket who shot a suicide bomber... the bomber set of a little bomb to get the cops/IDF's attention so when they got there they could set off a bigger bomb. The lady saw the bomber right after the first bomb went off and she shot 'em dead. My point is if the first bomb was a dud you didn't see before "-Bang- fizzle fizzle" or "spitter sputter phssst" and you don't plug 'em, they may be fixin' to go to plan B which will be bigger and badder than the first one was supposed to have been. You don't know. And you don't know that you won't have saved your own life and how many more. That's the emmediate thing though. The legal stuff later may be problematic as has been noted.

I think it's hard to say what anyone would do until they're faced with the situation.

What I think I'd do is draw on him/her and tell them to spread their hands and lay face down. If they did then you're probably safe. If they wouldn't comply or made a move then you have a reason [legally) to shoot.

I would hope I didn't have to but if I did have to shoot, it would be a H&H (Head and Heart).

    If you know for sure,

That's the hard part, especially beforehand when it will do any good, shoot enough and accurately enough to guarantee DRT then be aware for accomplices.

I think 6inch has the right idea, but I don't think I would want to shoot anywhere near COM, to many things that might go BOOM!!! At least untill I finish my on-line bomb disposal class....

Beat him with the luggage cart until subdued so the authorities can take him to some undisclosed location for questioning...

Well, if you can't completely restrain the person, then you need to shoot till the threat is neutralized. Just because the Shoe Bomber was having trouble getting his shoe to go boom, doesn't mean he would have failed if not stopped. It's either restrain the person, or shoot them. Preferably taking a CNS shot.

I certainly would not give him the opportunity to fix his malfunction or set of a secondary explosive. I would use any tools at my dispossal to arrange his timely demise.
