Guns-in-parks comment period extended

Folks were not happy when a 60-day comment period on new rules allowing loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges ended at midnight on the East Coast, but at 9 p.m. out West and even earlier in Hawaii. (See this earlier blog post on the topic.)

So the Department of Interior will now take comments for another 30 days, ending July 30.

The new rules would, according to a National Parks Conservation Association press release: "allow visitors to carry loaded, concealed firearms in National Parks and Wildlife Refuges in states where guns are allowed in parks and refuges under state law, a change from current regulations which require guns to be unloaded and locked away during visits to parks."

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, D-Ariz., chair of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, was among those calling for an extension, saying:

"It is my hope that ultimately the department will decide to abandon this ill-advised idea for the safety of park visitors and wildlife alike."

Read the language of the proposed rules and directions for commenting on this Federal Register posting.

They're doing everything within their power to obstruct this. Can't the administration just order them to stop the BS?

You got it! It is more than apparent that that's the real reason for the comment extension.............I have NEVER heard of such an action by a federal body relative to rule making.....

Frankly, I don't really care, I have and will continue to exercise whatever methods I deem necessary for my or my family's security...............But I'd really rather do it legally.

Leave me no option and I will do as I must

Kinda a "Beatle Bumble" situation you know: "If this be the law, then the law be a ass, a idiot". (Dickens)

Hey. The government you elected is obeying the rules it created. Why is everyone griping?

This is BS but the regulations will ultimately pass

KEEP SENDING IN PRO CCW COMMENTS

Don't count on those new regs ever being passed. If you do some research into the background of the people running the NPS, especially the woman heading the place, you'll find they are weird evil people who have their own weird evil agenda. They will do anything to keep this from happening, and they don't care who gets hurt. Right now they're trying like heck to have something happen so they can step in and say "see, that's why we can't have dangerous guns in our parks. They are not using logic here, as we all know, as all rational argument must conclude that allowing CCW anywhere makes everyone much safer. They don't care about that. When there is a rape or a murder in a park, and the victim was unable to defend herself by law, they say "see, that's why we can't allow guns in the park" and the average idiot in America today BELIEVES them. They know what they are doing. Right now they are trying to cause a huge jump in the crime rate in the parks over the coming years so they can get the new regs rescinded if we do manage to get them passed. These are smart, evil people, who should be fired, but are for some reason unanswerable royalty over millions upon millions of acres of our lands.

If they shut this down we will just have to sue..... Heller doesn't need incorporation to be valid on federal land. It's ironic that the places "owned" (stolen from the states) by the feds are the places the 2A is trampled most.

Girjalva has been a pain in our neck since he was elected, and I wish we could defeat him, send him packing with Ed Pastor, but he has lots of nambie pambies in his district.

They were also waiting, and hoping for a bad Heller decision. If Heller had gone the other way, they would have dropped the reg changes and given us the finger. I certainly expect the executive branch to step in at this point and tell that lady to either make the change or step down. NRA should be demanding this immediately.

I cannot see how to leave a comment on this subject at regulation .gov
Are you sure the comment period has been extended?

Perhaps they are trying to run out the clock until the current administration is gone. A different administration with a new Secretary of the Interior might stop this thing permanently.

Since they've extended the comment period does this mean that I can and should leave a second comment?

It would seem this has been motivated by the lack of comments that are against the change. I've climbed, camped and hiked for decades. I've never had a problem except in the National Parks.

I've had equipment stolen several times in Yosemite. Only time I've ever had a vehicle broken into was in Olympic National Park. In a parking lot within sight of the Ranger Station! When I reported it, the gun toting ranger told me it was a common occurrence. When I asked why there was no car prowl sign he said that "headquarters" thought it would send a bad message about the area.

Uh the person pushing this is Dirk Kempthorne, former governor of Idaho and current head over the National Park Service, ect.

I think that if a bunch of people request an initial comment period be extended it gets extended. Often these things get proposed and no one notices until towards the end of the first comment period. Think back to the proposed OSHA regs last year. NRA and NSSF asked that the comments be extended and they were. I notice that the Brady Bunch did not file their comments until very late so maybe they overlooked the comment period and are trying to drum up some more phoney outrage.

I wish someone would ask the Presidential candidates what their Interior Secretary would do about these regs...

I can't seem to find the button to leave the comment either.... I'm wondering if the extension did not end up becoming reality? I can't find anything different.... that link in the original post was the most current I could find. Anybody else know anything?

or you may hand deliver to the above address. Since the comment will be late, the agency may not elect to post the comment.
Be aware that any personal information you submit may also be posted for the world to see, so be careful what information you give.

It's reopened and can have comments posted online again. End of comment period is August 8. They really are going to push this past the election. When BO wins, the reg changes will disappear. Oh well, I waited 15 years. I guess I'll just never see any of the National Parks.
