I recently acquired some 12 gauge handloads. The data supplied was as follows:

It states that these shells are 1 3/8 ounces of 00 buckshot ( 10 pellets ) propelled by 25 grs. of PB powder with Cheddite primers in crimped Multihull hulls. A wad is also used. No buffer.

I am limited to shotshell reloading data. What would be the velocity or dram eq. of these shells? Are they within safe limits?

The same recipe has been used with 1 oz. slugs. Are these safe?

Any info is appreciated

25.0 grains sounds a little frisky with 1 3/8 oz.

But I don't have a clue what effect a Multihull hull with an unknown wad would have.

Besides that, I never recommend shooting some unknown persons reloads.

I'll go digging in my mountain of shotshell data and I'll likely find something that corresponds with that data. I'll let you know what I find.

But I have to agree with RC regarding shooting someone elses reloads. I've seen a few bad things happen with some elses reloads on a number of occasions. If I didn't personally load it, I'm not going to shoot it, its that simple. Under careless conditions, reloaded ammunition can cause the weapon to violently explode, thus harming you, up to and including, killing you.

Going to Hodgdon's site:

Shell: 2 3/4" REMINGTON STS, NITRO 27, OR GUN CLUB PLASTIC SHELLS
Load Type Gauge Shot Wt. Powder Primer Wad Powder Wt. (Gr.) Pressure Vel. (ft/s)
Lead Shot 12 1 3/8 oz. PB Fed. 209A Rem. SP12 19.5 11,000 PSI 1100
Lead Shot 12 1 3/8 oz. PB Fed. 209A WAA12R 19.5 10,900 PSI 1100
Lead Shot 12 1 3/8 oz. PB Rem. 209P Rem. SP12 21 11,000 PSI 1150
Lead Shot 12 1 3/8 oz. PB Rem. 209P WAA12R 21.5 10,900 PSI 1150
Lead Shot 12 1 3/8 oz. PB Win. 209 Rem. RP12 20.5 11,100 PSI 1100
Lead Shot 12 1 3/8 oz. PB Win. 209 WAA12R 21.5 11,000 PSI 1150

If you have trouble reading the copy/paste, the loading goes from 19.5 to 21.5 MAX with a 1-3/8 oz load using STS hulls

Personally, I would salvage the components

VaGunNut - I would not fire someone else's reloads unless I personally knew the highest care was used in their creation.
(not just because I was told so)

Many of us here won't sell or give out our reloads due to liability concerns as well.

after consulting my go-to shotshell guy.. he says those are WAYYYYYY over the top for safe limits..

so depending on how many you came in possession of.. either salvage the components or cut the hulls and dump them.

you could probably shoot 3 or 4... then sell the reciever of the gun and scrap the barrel.. with heavy lead and especially steel you NEVER EVER NOT EVEN ONCE push the max load.. not telling you that its safe to push really light loads such as 7/8 oz 12 ga but i do by a grain or 2.. where the starting pressures are around 5-6000 psi not already near 12,000.. my personal fav heavy lead flinging powder is HS-7

25 grains of pb is just fine with that load in a multi hull. Heck look at the data posted by oneounceload which calls for as much as 21.5 grains in an sts hull. The data and wad used was probably from bpi. The only thing that would concern me would be the fact that i can't be sure of what is really in those hulls since i didn't load them, but i have loaded plenty of multi hulls which are reifenhauser tubes and 25 grains of pb is not unreasonable with 10 pellets of 00 buck. Contact bpi and confirm the data (you will likely be able to identify the wads from their website) then you can make the decision of whether or not to trust what is written on the load info with the shotshells.
