Howdy:

I am looking for commercially-loaded standard pressure .38 Special 158gr semi-wadcutter ammo suggestions.

I suppose I could also be satisfied with one of the loads that use a wide, flat nose. I have seen those in cast lead and jacketed examples. in the past. Cowboy action RNFP is too stingy in the meplat. I would like something accurate and reliable. I already am familiar with Remington green box 158gr LSWC. It uses a swaged LSWC projectile. It is reliable, but no great shakes accuracy-wise and the super-soft lead deforms easily, just like the LSWC-HP loads. I'd prefer a hard cast LSWC that does not deform so easily.

BACKGROUND
A couple years back an old upper-limb injury came back and I was down the use of an upper limb for a while. One way I compensated was to shuck off the Underwood/Buff Bore 158gr +P LSWCHP cartridges and load my .38 Special snubby with 148gr target wadcutters, preferably Federal Gold Match. Revolver reloads are timey affairs to begin with, but reloading with wadcutters and a bum limb was more comic relief than training. I have since had surgery & recovered, but I have kept the wadcutters in the snubby and and Rem LSWC in the speed strip.

I do reload wadcutters and semi-wadcutters, but prefer commercial ammo for potential social situations.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

The Winchester version is a good variant- X38WCPSV. I have used it many time for a duty load in older .38 special guns, like a 60's Colt PPS or Agent.

Why not just commercial 148 Wadcutters. The Meplat is already as large as you can get. I know they tend to be a bit wimpy velocity wise but there has to be a brand that is loaded somewhat hot.

Winchester X38WCPSV, gotcha.

Wadcutters start off in my snubby's chamber, but they are more prone to fumbling during a reload. Any bullet profile can hang up, but wadcutters are most prone to it. SWC somewhat less so.

Check out Georgia arms, they have always made incredible ammo and somehow it always arrives the day after I order it.

They have wadcutters or plated semi wadcutters lead semi wadcutters you name it.

It is 32$ per 50 which is basically what I'm seeing on the shelves these days...

Georgia Arms looks quite promising.

Thanks.

I'll vouch for them, they also will buy back your empty brass.

consider the Buffalo Bore 38 Spl item 20D, a 150 gr WC at an advertised 850 fps from a short barrel?
Yep, and the Underwood analog. That is my favorite "woods load" when I go into the woods and I don't want to carry a big hunk of iron. Good stuff. But not so good for reloading from speed strip or speed loader.

Just for kicks I did a search as I haven’t seen any commercial .38 Special ammo in a couple of years. It seems Sportsman’s Warehouse has a decent selection, but no SWC ammo.

@roo_ster
I did find some on Ammoseek:
https://ammoseek.com/ammo/38-special/-handgun-158grains?ikw=SWC

Looking at the Grizzly, it is obviously cast, so likely to hold its shape better than the swaged SWC for carry.

And Federal is making Nyclad again? Good news, though it is +P. I recall Federal making a standard pressure 158gr LSWC-HP Nyclad, though I don't recall a straight-up LSWC variant.

Thanks for the pointers.

pre-flu panic, pre-brandon eras, i bought alot of georgia arms ammo at gunshows in a variety of calibers, mostly softer flavors of 38sp at about $15/50: i most highly recommend, even at today’s higher prices.
