Well, I've been here trying to trap for several months. I've not caught one pig, but a couple a deer. Think it was the same deer twice. :cuss: I've got a feeder near my trap that I've caught pigs on the camera at about every other night. I've got pigs all over the place here, shot a sow in the friggin' back yard. Well, so I was goofing off in Hallettsville yesterday while the wife was getting her hair done. There's a hardware store with guns and outdoor/hunting stuff there, so I was lookin' at all the goodies and they had this 1 gallon jug, sorta like an antifreeze jug, of this read syrup called "Pig Out". Now, I've been told that the other stuff they had, "Hog Wild", isn't much more than strawberry jello which I've been using with no results, so I bought this Pig Out on a whim. I put it out last night and the pigs, smart as they are, pushed the damned trap out of the way and gobbled every grain of corn I put out that had the Pig Out on it. They seem to like it, but I had to anchor my trap with a couple of old T posts and I tied the back end to a tree so the devils can't push the trap now. If they want it, they're going to have to go in after it.

Jury is out on when I'll catch the first one up here, but these ferals seem to be a lot smarter than the Europeans down on my place in Calhoun county which never moved the trap before. :banghead: I said in another post, when I caught the deer, that the deer up here are dumber. Well, the pigs make up for it. :)

Anyone ever try "pig out"? You don't use much of it and it's pretty cheap, 10 bucks for a gallon. I'll be a regular customer if I start catching pigs. Sure seemed to get their attention last night, anyway.

Sounds like those pigs have been "ejukated" to traps before you arrived. They are smart. I had a wild boar that was trapped as a young adult. I had him for about 5 years and he got some impressive cutters by then. 2 bulldogs caught him through the fence and tore up his snout and ears pretty good. He had tamed down a lot but I was still leery of him. I loaded a syringe with tetracycline and called him to the fence. I cautiously stroked him and talked to him and gave him the injection in 3 places because tetracycline hurts like crazy when you inject too much in one area. He stood perfectly still and never tried to cut me. I believe he knew I was helping him. They are about as smart as a dog.

I don't know about Pig Out but a buddy of mine swore by Cotten candy surip for snow cone
He would get it at Walmart or Sams personly I think anything sweet and fruity will work.
As for smart pigs your gues is as good as mine.

Actually, I think you’ve got it backwards.

The pigs at your new site aren’t smarter, they are dumber.

Just put out a ‘Corn Arrow’ and see if things improve! ;)

MC, our 200 acres is NW of Fort Worth. My BIL built a beautiful 16x4x4 aluminum frame and cattle panel trap with guilletine door and has been running a very successful wildlife feeding program with it. He has some awesome deer pictures but not much else to show for his efforts.

We have multiple deer feeders on our property, so I think they much prefer to eat from those rather than enter a small enclosure. We have trail cameras at each feeder, and they are regulars almost every night. The only two hogs killed since they invaded our property in Nov. 2011 was one I shot at my feeder and one my nephew shot at a tank by our trailer. Both were spur of the moment kills. I have sat in my stand all night on numerous nights and none appeared, but the nights before and after that my camera showed them all over my feeder. Very frustrating.

MC, I hunted a place in Gonzales county where the hogs were trapwise. I had to completely cover the wire floor with earth, and stack brush all around, and on top of the trap to conceal its shape. I started catching them after that.

That makes sense. Around here hogs make little "huts" by pushing up pine needles, branches, and leaves with their snouts and then burrowing into them to sleep in a warm place on cold days. So they obviously aren't claustrophobic.

never had any luck with hog wild or pigout, pig likor etc. They like plain old corn the best. They seem to like Mumme's Cron with apple scent but I cant tell if they like it more or less. They do like my kid's stale breakfast cereal. I have put all kinds of stuff out for them in front of my cameras and corn is the winner every time. I tried old fruit, peaches, apples, pears and sometimes they sniff them, roll them and eventually eat them.

As for your traps, hide the threshold, they dont like to step over things- kinda like a cattle guard.

Agreed.

Note in post # 4......I have made a 'ramp' leading into the entrance and also filled in the doorway. You can leave some metal exposed...but don't create anything they have to step up over....or will stumble on.

Small things (collectively) make a difference.

Mm, well, I never had a problem with it on my other place. It's got I guess 1/2" angle it's made out of.

May take a shovel out there and cover up the wire on the ground. Maybe they don't like the wire showing? I never had a problem with that on my old place, but then, it pretty quickly got covered up with sand.

Edit, and then he reads this post....

Well, I guess that's what I'll do. There's lots of dead tree limbs around I can stack around it when I cover the floor. Thanks. I have a plan, now. I'm only 2 counties over from Gonzales, Colorado real close to the Lavaca county line off 90A. Maybe those hogs taught my hogs. Hell, might be a hog high school around Hallettsville somewhere. :D

One item that never fails to attract hogs is those Christmas fruit cakes. You know, the kind that some strange gave you that you know is re-gift from last Christmas. People at work knows I collect them after Christmas so I usually get couple. I cut them into pieces and leave them out by the tree stand. They are always gone within first night.

a friend had a contact at at a sweet potato cannery in SLA. well he got the cull sweet taters, a whole utility trailer full. dumped them on his place that is crawling with wild hogs ---not even a sniff they would not eat the sweet taters, however he caught a few smaller ones on corn in a wire trap and shot a few. I imagine the acorn crop was good enough that they didn't need the taters???

Bull

LOL! Or maybe they took a class at Victoria college here in Gonzales!

Your Pic of the trap looks great! I hope it works for you as it did for me. The only thing I see missing is Flint's corn arrow!...lol

Another thing that will make them back out is if they feel something on there feet that is not normal ground. I notice you have the hog wire on the bottom. You may want to remove this or cover it up. I built mine without a bottom. Doing so requires you to secure the trap with T post so the hogs can't lift it or scoot it around. And you have to build the door to be self supporting. Also any time you handle it wear gloves. If the smell the human sent they will avoid it too.

Good luck they are one smart pest.

McGunner, I am having the same problem in Victoria County and so are my neighbors. Seems like a few years ago you had at least one hog in the trap every time you checked, now nothing. I have not tried using fancy store bought bait yet though. I'll move up to that as soon as I can get a paved road!

There are plenty of Hogs being seen, caught on game cams, and signs of them, just not getting trapped like they used to. If you figure it out let me know. I am out of hog sausage.

In the mean-time I am shopping for a night vision scope.

I'd hunt 'em at night, but I'd rather be in bed with mama. :D I went down to my place once near Seadrift and shot one about 12 midnight. Drug it home, quartered and got it on ice, sun was coming up before I got back in bed. I had to wonder if it was really worth it. Guess I'm not a night person. Now, I worked shift work at Formosa Plastics for 21 years. You'd THINK I'd be used to it, but not really.

I do think a night vision rig would be fun, though. :D
