Commercial or Mil-spec AR?

I have a S&W M&P15 AR and want to get another stock for it. Is this gun a commercial or mil-spec? How would I tell the difference? This is my first AR. Don

On a commercial spec tube, the body of the tube is about even with the tops of the threads. On a milspec tube, the body of the tube is about even with the bottoms of the threads. In other words, the threads are higher than the tube body.

My S&W is milspec. I havent seen any S&Ws with commercial buffer tubes. With that said, i have not looked at a S&W sport.

In order for it to be milspec, it has to be fully automatic with a 14.5 inch barrel and be government inspected.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the milspec marketing by gun companies. Stock diameter doesn't mean much when it comes to nuts and bolts of weapon operation.

Rhino, you might want to get more hung up on the context, as the mil-spec for receiver extension tubes doesn't specify a barrel length or fire control.

stock diameter may not mean much when it comes to nuts and bolts of weapon operation, but it means a lot when you're trying to order a new stock and need to know what size to get.
