I have recently been reading SHTF post talking about what will be common calibers if something catostrophic happens. Of course 7.62x39mm,.223, .308 Because these are military calibers currently used by many world militaries. The latter two also fairly common sporting calibers as well. So I started thinking about what are common sporting calibers in my area if I ever had to beg, borrow or steal ammo. I live in Maine and while .223 is available in gunstores its not as common of a hunting round as 7.62x39mm.
In my area .30-06 is by far the most common. .308 .30-30, .270 and .243 are starting to get more popular here as well.

Not to say that these are the only calibers available but I think in my area if I had a .30-06 or a .308 I could probably count on obtaining some sporting ammunition. Which is primarily what average people will have on hand.

Just curious what might be common in your area, something to think about.

doubt if common

around my neck of the woods its the 270 /30/30 30/06 all common in the woods im looking at a new handi rifle in 25/06 it would be about all you would ever need except for ammo but if times got very hard id make my own black powder and load cut nails if i had too BP is very easy to make an NRA instructor showed a bunch of us that it is very possible to make ,un till then ill just buy some every month some PB and some IMR and some rel7 and others keep building a supply and store it safely warm and dry id sleep better nights ?for deer the model 99 savage is my first choice and then .444 does a fine job

I'm skeptical about that. I mean to say, if something happens that's so nasty that you will feel the need to have more ammunition all of the sudden than you ordinarily have lying around, it will likely have spurred such a run on ammo that NOTHING will be laying around on store shelves. I understand that ammo was about the first thing to disappear in the wake of Katrina. So, to my way of thinking, the far better way to go about it is to choose a rifle in the caliber you WANT, and then have a significant stash of ammo for it--'cause if desparate times roll around, that's probly all you're gonna get.

Still, to answer the question--there's a lot of open country around here, and elk that live in it, so 7mmmag & 300 Winmag are almost as popular as the everlovin' 30-06 and it's kid brother, the .270 (though not quite).
