Compak-16- produces 3000FPS from a 14" barrel

I read an article in the newest issue of Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement. They profiled a new AR-15 carbine. This particular carbine had a modified gas system and barrel. The gas system had a "gas trap" which lowered the pressure of the gas before it cycled the action, reducing the rate of fire (to about 600RPM), and reducing the wear on the parts and barrel. It also keeps a lot of the carbon fouling out of the reciever. Also, the barrel had polygonal and "progressive" rifling, optimized for 52-66gr bullets. Because of the special rifling, the 14.5" barreled carbine produced velocities comparable to velocities from a 20" barreled M-16.

While the gun looks neat and all I didnt see anything that would indicate that level of velocity in the short barrel. Velocity, for the 5.56, is the main component to give the round it's effectiveness, and all the other cool features do not make up for lack of it.

Progressive (I assume they mean gain twist) rifiling can increase muzzle velocity, as can polygonal rifling. I'd be interested enough to buy one and chrono it myself...

If that's the case then there's no reason why that type of barrel cannot be used in a better rifle system, say a XM8 or a Chris II MBR

While you dudes are hard at it, let me ask a quick question:

for some reason, the XM8's 12.5" barrel's published velocities is about equal to the velocity of an 11.5" AR. Anyone know why this is?

As for the 20" velocities from a 14.5", I'm skeptical.

Published velocities vary so much that you have to cite the same source, ammo lot, and conditions to accurately compare barrels. Polygonal progressive twist barrels have been around a while and they have always made grand claims that are exaggerated more than factual. Yes, polygonal twist does produce many advantages but the 'old school' refuses to use this type of rifling. As for progressive twist, the twist is already progressive. The velocity of the bullet when it contacts the rifling is low and rotational velocity increases rapidly as the bullet progresses down the bore. The difference between progressive twist and standard twist is so small as to remain insignificant. Of course, I'm basing this on what I've read as I have no firsthand experience.

I'd love for Polygonal twist to be used more. It has its problems too. The greatest problem it has is one of accuracy but that's only relative. Cut rifling has always been more accurate. Barrel life is significantly increased, wear is decreased, cleaning is quicker, and velocity is increased around 5% if I remember correctly.

As for the Article, I didn't read it. This source is dubious at best often publishing hype as fact.

Interesting. I wonder what kind of velocities they can get with this system with 20" barrels if what they say is true? Makin' a .223 into a 22-250. Problem is I always hear how 22-250 barrels don't last because the velocity is so high.

I got the original article from a gun rag...another source of junk jounalism. What the article really said was that "The 9.5" version generates (velocity numbers), while a standard 11.5" barrel generates (velocity numbers a few hundred FPS lower, sorry, don't remember specifics). I've been told that the 14" version generates velocities exceeding a standard 20" barrel".

I don't know why you felt the need to take a gratuitous shot at my site. I don't know you, and, up until now, had no problem with you.

Right now, there are military infantry (including SPECOPS/SPECWAR personnel) and Private Military Company (PMC) operators/contractors in Iraq and Stan (Afghanistan)--as well as LE SWAT and 1st Responders all over the world--that consider DefenseReview to be a valuable and useful online resource for staying up to date on the "latest and greatest" in tactical armament. That's enough for me.

And, ya' know what? Some of those people might actually be more experienced and knowledgable than even an expert like yourself.

It's possible you don't fully understand the format of our site. DefRev's a Slashdot.org style online tactical technology magazine designed to give people up-to-date info on the latest developments in tactical small arms, equipment/gear, and training. Sometimes we don't feel like going into deep detail on a particular item. Sometimes, we just want to let people know about a new and interesting product as soon as we hear about it, and before we have a lot of intel on it yet--and before anyone else has reported on it. Other times, we may just want to let people know about an article on a new or cool product that caught our attention in one of the print magazines. So, we tell 'em about it.

In other words, some of our articles are just heads-up style blurbs that are valuable in their own right for keeping people up-to-date on the aforementioned "latest and greatest" of what's out there in the tactical armament arena. If our site were to do nothing else other than just that one thing, it would still be a valuable resource for a lot of people.

Do we occasionally make a mistake in our reporting? Sure. We try to avoid it, of course--but we own up to it and correct it, when it happens.

And, unlike many of the firearm print publications, we're not beholden to ANY adverstiser. We don't kowtow to any companies. Ever. Well...at least not yet. ;-)

It's easy to take shots at people on the boards, "Badger Arms". It's much harder to build something like DefenseReview.

I'm sorry DefenseReview doesn't measure up to your standards. Then again, I'm not gonna' lose any sleep over it, either.
