I am preparing to load some .357 magnum cartridges with VVN110 behind a Hdy 125 grn HP-XTP. This is the starting load in the VV Reloading Data. I noted two things of interest: They call for a "small pistol primer", no mention of magnum, and the powder comes very close to filling the case when the bullet is seated at the recommended C.O.L. (standard .357). Just taking some measurements with the max load of powder in the case (which I will work up to slowly and carefully), and assuming the C.O.L. at the recommended length, indicates significant compression will be required to fully seat the bullet. I would have thought a magnum primer would be required with this much powder, but I will , of course, use the stated primer. This is new territory for me dealing with full case loads and compression of the powder . I would appreciate hearing comments from those who have had experience with this loading situation. Thanks

I would just like to confirm what 45ACPUSER stated about following listed loading data. I just checked the current Speer #14 Manual and it also shows loading data for Viht N110 with small pistol (not Magnum) primers. I have never used their powders but I would follow their recommendations. :)

Using a long drop tube on your measure will get the powder level lower in the case. It compacts the powder as it fills the case, so it sits lower. Drop the charge slowly. That trick is used all the time in rifle applications. Just stay within the max, don't use it as an excuse to put more powder than the manual calls for in there. ;) :)
