Computer RPGs w/ Guns & Stuff

I'm not much for RPG games, usually preferring FPS types. Flashpoint does have some RPG elements: story, characters, etc. You don't develop characters in that you can build their abilities, but in the Resistance add-on you do have to scavenge your weapons. It’s rather slow-paced for a first person shooter and you need to think and plan before opening up with your PK/M60/RPG7/etc.

In fact, using your brain is most of the game, since you command troops and there is no single correct way to complete a mission. There’s a lot of fun in sneaking into a Russian camp, stealing a T80, running over a few badguys, then blasting their vehicles or, sneaking in, planting some satchel charges, sneaking out, and detonating the charges from a distance.

To minimize frustration, though, you should look up the savegame cheat.

I have to add my thumbs up to the Fallout series. 1 and 2 are the best and have some of the most in-depth story and character development that I've ever seen. You can go through the games as a good or evil character, and you can go through talking your way through every situation, or shooting your way through it. For $10 for both you can't really go wrong. Look at any electronics store or a place like Target and you can find it.

Fallout Tactics is a little different though. I found it to be quite fun, but it wasn't RPG based. It was built as a strategy game using the Fallout games as a background.

They are post-apocalyptic and have some energy weapons, but I can't recommend these games enough. They are a relatively serious and humerous set of games in the same package. They do have some real weapons, although the Desert Eagle .44 is the only thing that comes to mind, and then there is the .223 pistol.

haha, that .223 pistol is actually a movie prop. It was copy of the futuristic antimatter blaster, a prop made by using Steyr Mannlicher .222 Model SL rifle receiver and Bulldog revolver, used by Harrison Ford in the movie BLADE RUNNER. Another little unnoticed trivia that adds fun to the FALLOUT game. I've just remembered that there is British SA-80 HB Light machinegun in that game also.

Sorry Skunkabilly, they are shooters, not RPG. I latched on to the "modern setting with modern firearms and stuff?"

I'll go back to the shallow end of the pool now....:uhoh:

"Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game."

My favorite has always been X-Com 1. Ancient by today's standards but immortal for fun factor.

anyone have left over 'Jagged Alliance 2' I can have or swap with my Fall Out 2 (I beat it dozen times alrady).:D

RPG Games with Guns eh?
Here's a few:neener:

Final Fantasy X-2
Xenogears (See Billy Lee Black)
SOCOM (Navy Seals RPG)
Unreal 2 (Sci-Fi Allien RPG Shoot em up)
Vietcong (Good Vietnam RPG)
RedFaction 2 (Sci-Fi Revolution RPG)
Battlefield 1942 (WW2 MMORPG type FPS)
The Thing (Sci-Fi Horror Monster Shooting RPG)

Yuk, I am sick of FPS. If you want realistic FPS, join army. 'THE THING' was a total disappointment. I used to love Counter Strike, until EVERYONE became a hacker/cheater.

Me thinks some people here don't really understand what an RPG is. No matter. Really, try the Fallout games, Skunk. They're older than what you're looking for, but I think they're as close as you're going to come.

I dunno, I consider myself an RPG player, then a shooter. I have one gun but have played pen and paper in addition to computer and console RPG's for years. X-com is an excellent game as well, although you may need an older machine to play it on. I think it's original requirements were for a 386 processor and 2-4 MB of RAM. I have gotten it to run on my Athlon XP 2000 though, so it can be done. That one is a little hard to find sometimes, you might be able to find the collectors edition at a gaming store though. If not, you might be able to get someone to compress it and email it to you. It's not an RPG though, but an excellent strategy game.

As for that .223 pistol, holy cow! That's exactly what it looked like. I didn't think it actually existed, even if it was only a prop. For your modern era gaming needs though, I can't think of any RPGs that fit well in that category unfortunately.

As has been answered already, a MMORPG is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, however, you do need to keep in mind that you will have to pay a monthtly charge for the game (usually $10-$15).

Did you play the expansion to JA2, "unfinished buisiness". its basically more of the same with a slightly different managment model and some new guns. Its kinda what "deadly games" was to the original. Beyond that im at a loss.

People take way too many hits in JA though... even the .50 BMG takes two torso hits to kill someone! Otherwise, one of the best non-action gun games out there. I'd love to play a lightgun game that simulates the ESPN Outdoors Games rifle competition, especially with the Dueling Tree where you can unscore your opponent's targets. Heck, with a computer version, the possibilities are endless... like play pinball against an opponent or something.

Skunkabilly & Dochumbert (and everyone else):
www.electronicsboutique.com has Jagged Alliance 2: Gold (JA2 and Unfinished Business packaged together) for $8+shipping. Gold edition is MUCH better than the normal edition, smarter enemies and everything (Skunk, I've seen a few of your posts on The Bear Pit, but I only lurk there, so you probably know that already). The enemies throw flares/chemlights during night missions instead of never using them, for one. They also editted the sniper rifles so they're more balanced (two of my six mercs carry Dragunovs, with either an AKM or Colt Commando for backup, and if they can see it, its dead). Also, they added F, Del and End key functions from Unfinished Business, F shows distance to target, Del & End show cover & line of sight at the area in question (I forget which key does which), which is VERY helpful in planning out where you want your mercs.

Regarding the Barrett in JA2:UB, headshots are the only way to go: *BOOM!!!* Splat! "Damn, I dont want to go like that". Any of the .308s will put someone down with one good headshot in JA2 (I havent played UB too much, I prefer the JA2 strategy style over the UB style), and by the time you get those rifles, you should be doing headshots 80% of the time anyway.

I almost always have a game of JA2 in progress, since I always restart from the beginning when my custom merc gets killed. I just lost Igor this morning, but I got an FN-FAL at the same time (at the Alma prison); I love having Igor, Grunty and my AutoWeapons/Stealthly custom merc as my CQB team (I only attack towns at night, patrols anytime but only if I absolutely have to during the daytime), but I love the FAL too. I cant decide if I should restart or not since Igor's always the third guy in the door whenever the stinky stuff hits the fan and wields a mean AK74 (Grunty's currently got an AUG with scope (and he totally RULES the battlefield with it, headshots 95% of the time), custom merc normally has an G3A3/M14/FAL with laser and scope). Buns, Grizzly and Barry normally round out my primary squad, but I lost Barry early on (while on my first walk to Tony's), replaced him with Hitman (armed him with a Dragunov), who bought it at the Chitzena SAM, who I replaced with Raven, who is currently ripping up the battlefield with Buns as my two snipers.

Anyway, whats $~15? Buy the game from EB and they'll have more motivation to get JA3 done on time.

Skunk:
Yes, thats about what it amounts to.

C_yeager:
Anytime. :D

A short note to everyone: The Gold Edition CDs arent the most-current versions of the game, www.strategyfirst.com has the patch for JA2, and there's a patch for UB out on the web somewhere. Also, you must temporarily disable your file system virus protection when playing, as the game engine generates lots of temporary files which Norton Antivirus (and probably any other program) craps a brick over and really slows down the load times (20 second load times become 5-7 minutes). For Norton, you can right-click on the little shield on the system tray and deselect 'Enable File System Realtime protection' to turn off the scan that doesnt like JA, when you're done playing, just right click and reselect it.

Might want to try http://www.play.net/mo/

Here is the description --

Welcome to Modus Operandi!
A mysterious island paradise filled with danger and excitement! Modus Operandi is a modern day role-playing game that combines mystery, adventure, and romance with the excitement of an ongoing story based on Morada, a fictional island in the Caribbean

Could be fun, I haven't played it. I played one of the other games this company hosts.
